Tank bag suggestions?

Howdy all!

I've been carrying some things in a backpack with me when I ride.  It's an old Jansport pack, which works well, but also feels like a sail on my back.  I really don't like the drag it creates, the feeling that I have to keep tightening the straps throughout the ride, or the fear of what those things could do to me if I fall on them.  So I'd like to get something to carry these items and get them off my back.  A tank bag seems like it would be a good choice for around town and weekend riding.

Seems there are 3 options for attachment:  magnetic, strap, and tank ring.  Magnetic could work with some well placed metal/magnets under our plastic tank cover.  Straps seems straight forward enough.  Tank ring is a very clean setup, but cost a little more.  I like that this design could allow for different sized bags to be quickly interchanged as needed.  The only 2 ring mounts I see that currently work with our FZ07 are the Givi and SW-Motech.  Anyone know if bags of the same line can be swapped around on the strap mounts?

Sizes seem to range from barely enough to be useful to kitchen sink...  but looks like 5 - 10L could be good for local riding.  I'd love one that supports a hydration bladder, but those are huge.  I don't think I want a big bag for local/daily riding.  Maybe it would be better to get a hydration only pack for my back for that and keep tank bag small?

I'm currently going through search results here looking for ideas and review commentary.  I thought I'd also post here for suggestions.  What have you used?  What did you like, what didn't you like?  Any issues or concerns I'm not aware of since I've not had a tank bag before?

Some options I'm considering:

Strap mount:  https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/cortech-super-20-low-profile-tank-bag

Givi tank ring:  https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-tanklock-bike-specific-flange-yamaha-fz-07-2015-2017

Givi bag:  https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-st603-sport-t-tanklock-tank-bag

SW-Motech ring:  https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sw-motech-quick-lock-evo-tankring-adapter-kit-yamaha-fz-07-2015-2017

SW-Motech bag:  https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sw-motech-quick-lock-evo-daypack-tank-bag

Thanks!

I have the yamaha OEM tankbags with the tank ring, there are 3 different sizes of tankbags available (in the EU though). I got the 'sport' tankbag and it's about the size of a bread :P I picked up one with a tankring because i don't trust those with magnetic things and straps are meh.

@sniperelite, thanks for the pictures.  That looks like the SW-Motech ring.  I don't see those listed as US Yamaha accessories though.  The bag seems to be a reskinned Sport bag:  https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sw-motech-quick-lock-evo-sport-non-electric-tank-bag

I think this might be about the biggest I'd consider for around town.

Look about the same size indeed. But i'd look around if you can find someone who has this on their mt-07. The 'tankopening' is very close to the instrumentcluster, that's why the OEM tankbag ring is moved forward with those brackets. Maybe it doesn't fit ?

That makes sense.  The Givi moves it forward as well.  I really like how clean the install is with the ring mounts.

You guys are going to think this is ghetto... but I've tried a few tank bags.. the best one is a 20 dollar backpack.

No joke. Throw the shoulder straps over the front "intake vents" and sinch it up. On long trips I put my rain gear and clothes or sleeping bag, soft things in there. You can lean on it allllll day long and it's super comfy.

Best part is, after you're done, you just take the backpack with you and it's a normal backpack. It's cheap, works like a charm, and comes with all the features you'd expect from a fancy backpack.

I could see that working, and sounds very practical in that you have a backpack with you when off bike.  Thanks for the idea

I use a Kriega 10 tail bag, does much the same job as a tank bag without getting in the way and is cheaper. It fit perfectly to the standard straps located under the pillion seat.

I've read good things about the Kriega bags.  Thank you for the suggestion.

I probably should have prefaced my post with some additional planning info.  I already have plans for the tail of the bike.  My intention is to eventually have saddle bags and maybe a rear box.  The plan for the back seat is to be setup for my dog.  I don't have family in state, so when it comes time to travel, either he gets boarded or goes with me.  He's a small dog, so I think I can make that work.  That plan could always change at some point, but I figured I didn't want to come to depend on something I may not be able to use in this configuration.

I use a Bagster kit, with a cover that attach to the tank cover and a two-story large tank-bag that is attached to the cover and is quickly removed.

I saw that while digging through the search results.  Your's is a nice shade of green.  It looked kind of large and cumbersome.  What do you like about it?

It's green just because I had one laying around and didn't want to spend money on another just because of the colour. Besides, the green perfectly match my Kawasaki leather jacket :D

What I like about it is that it is secure while riding, easy to remove when refueling (although there are designs that are simpler still) and, most importantly, that there is a lot of space inside. Especially when using both bags on top of each other.

Though my bike is red, I think the green looks good.  If I could have gotten the ABS in a forest green, it would be a done deal!  ;)

@sniperelite, is that condensation inside the map pocket in this picture?  Did the bag come with a rain cover?

Yes that is condensation and it is wet from the rain. it did come with a raincover, but i don't bother. Been riding trough some heavy rain and it never got wet inside, this photo is taken after a 1hr ride with heavy downpour (gotta love belgium...). Just a quick wipe with some cloth on the inside of the plastic top part is enough.

On a side note. I have used backpacks for years because the don't have to be played with to get on and off. The trick it to get a running or MTB backpack which has a chest and waist strap. Stops it being blown around.

A backpack of a decent shape should reduce your drag not increase it, as it helps maintain the flow longer and reduce vortex shedding a bit. The cycling/ motobike dedicated backpacks nowdays are a design that helps keep the flow attached for as long as possible. Unfortunately they tend to be stupidly expensive. I suspect the Chinese will make decent copies sooner or later.

ps a back pack also allows you to put a water bladder in and helps protect your back in an accident.

Go forth and modify my son...go forth and modify...

I had not considered a more aerodynamic backpack.  I was also considering the pack contents to be a danger to me.  I've given some thought to wearing only a hydration bladder pack instead of a full backpack, but that means I still need another pack for other items.

After too much research and analysis...  I decided to give the strap mount version of this one a try:  https://www.nelsonrigg.com/luggage/cl-series/journey-sport-tank-bag-detail.html.  Picked it up from Amazon here:  http://a.co/e8MNQ8O.

It's a medium sized bag, and I feel that it will be just big enough to not only get the hard items out of my backpack, but to not use a backpack most of the time.  It doesn't seem like it will be too big for this bike for daily use, yet can expand to carry more if needed for a trip.  I like that it has lifetime warranty, internal organization, rain cover (most include this), cable grommets, map pocket, can be carried like a backpack, and is hydration ready.  Though I'm not sure I will get one, they also sell an add on item that can hold GPS and medium phones here:  https://www.nelsonrigg.com/luggage/cl-series/journey-gps-mate-detail.html.  I've not yet decided where I want to mount my phone.

I'll return after I've had some time with it to report my thoughts on it.

I see that you already made a decision on a tank bag. But just in case, here are options from Hepco & Becker that work really well. They use a tank ring and the bag is elevated slightly off the tank. It attaches to a magnetic lock. https://www.motomachines.com/Tank-Bags_c_633.html

I've been wanting to get a tank bag also.  I was going to go with the sw-motech quick lock but I can't find the lock adapter for our bike.  I just ordered the Givi Tank Lock bag, I'll post some pictures and comments once I receive it.

Hepco & Becker Lock it Tank Ring.  Small, magnetic (easy on, pull tab off)  works excellent  motomachines offers a forum discount as well.  And unlike the picture on their site it is black powdercoat.

Which bag did you use with this tank ring?
