Tires today compared to "Back in the day" have evolved into some radical tech and compound variants. The bottom line is tires back in the day vs modern day share two common items Inspection and Maintenance. I have seen tires on bikes that simply defy rational logic, with sides almost showroom while the center is squared and showing fiber to the nail ridden, plug plagued squid rides needless to say IMO tires and condition are the most important maintenance item you can train yourself to do.
