Keeping the stock air filter is apparently better than aftermarket items. And that a clean and well oiled chain plus slick engine oil also aid performance, as does removing the noise killer. Unfortunately, they did all these things in one go so it is impossible to tell what had what effect.

Maybe on a BMW 1000....

Exactly this.

Each engine is different. Some are bunged up more than others, some have a certain resonant pressure wave designed into the airbox for performance reasons. Some airboxes just fit and look good. More airflow isn't always more power. The guy doing the hydrodynamic flowcharts on these forums can attest to that.

The way I see it, if the BMW 1000 RR has a large volume airbox, a high flow filter is moot since the engine can feed on the air already inside the box.  I wonder if that makes sense to anyone else?

Well, there is a reason why manufacturers strive for large volume airboxes.  SO... what is it?

Well I removed the filter lid and snorkel on my Fz airbox and have the ejk on for fueling at it did make a noticeable difference in power. What makes the biggest performance difference for small type mods is having my chain super clean and lubed. Like , snappy n good feeling it’s good.

Just in case your original comment was sincere - regardless of how large the airbox is, the amount sucked in by the engine must always be replaced as quickly as it is spent. The BMW S1000RR, at maximum load, probably takes in 5,000 litres of air per minute, which is a heck of a lot more than any airbox holds. Hence the same filter will have the same restriction regardless of airbox size. The size and shape is dictated by resonance and flow requirements.
