sen07 Posted November 1, 2017 Share Posted November 1, 2017 Hi guys. I ride my bike as a commuter to work everyday (even if its going to rain). The road i travel isn’t much to desire, its bumpy, potholes and rubbles, sometimes you cant see them. You and i all know this bike came with a terrible shock. I dont do weekend knee dragging, dont do passenger or go to a track. I pretty much looking for an upgrade that could take bumpy road and stability on high speed or corners. What shock should i get? r1limited Posted November 1, 2017 Share Posted November 1, 2017 WR450 There are many shocks to choose from, penske, ohlins etc. There is no right or wrong answer it is a question on setup. Much of the stability issues is the front end, get that rigth the rear wil follow. If your running dirt roads I would suggest you look at front and rear suspenders on the FZ and set them up with appropirate springs for your weight. Most good suspension folks will ask you the questions such as what type of riding do you do, weight and so on. No dont get me wrong, i travel normal road but its just bad and bumpy. The bike screams for a better shock. We dont get many shocks available here. It's really hard to do worse than OEM. You could put a bit of rubber tree limb between the clevis instead of the shock and it would probably perform better. The name is escaping me ATM but there is a cut-rate shock supplier somewhere near you, Thailand I think. I would look at YSS too. you've consulted this page? Yes ive read the page and u sir is a master, im hoping if u coould help me with these : 1. Say if i get a basic upgrade (shock) from whatever brands, do they need servicing? When? Is it important to get it service by a specialised shop? Or any garage that service shock could do? 2. Im still broke and what to do with what i have now. Im 67-70kg with gears. r1limited Posted November 5, 2017 Share Posted November 5, 2017 @sen07 Suspension is fairly straight forward. sring rate is the biggest stumbling block IMO. Just get a spring rate that is set for your weight without gear. Some say with gear I guess it depends on application such as racing. Since street everyday riding getting the springs to rider weight is a must. From there it is setting sag and ensuring both front and rear settle evenly. if sage is set properly, you have say a 10 weight oil (example) apply the front brake and sit on the bike, both front and rear should settle evenly. If that happens your 2/3rds there, the rest is just how you feel when riding, you may need to adjust rear or front just depends on what you feel. Now do not go into panic mode over stuff you are not feeling or experienced with like the front pushing or rear sinking under braking. Most cases this is when you start feeling more confident on the bike and start to feel the "TWITCHING" and becoming more accustom to the feel of minor setting changes. What shock/fork spring would u suggest for my kind of riding? thanks Yes all shocks need servicing sooner or later. 10,000 miles or 3 years is a quick rule of thumb. Depends how dirty your riding environment is - if you ride in the rain/dust a lot and get all kinds of crud on the shaft then it can tear the seals and bushings up a lot faster. Any shop that regularly services shocks can handle it - I don't mean automotive, I mean motorcycle. Now if you just so happen to have an Ohlins or Penske guy then I would give him the nod. Such shops should also have no big problem servicing the Hyperpro or whatever. At 70kg you're in that "one size fits all" range. Measure your sag (front+rear, bike only and you on it) and that will tell you if something needs to be change on spring rate or preload. Just going off the pictures of the 465 shock it looks like they mandate a hydraulic preload adjuster? That'll add a quick $200 to the price that you could skip by going with a K-Tech Razor Lite or the Penske, Nitron etc. YSS, K-Tech, Hyperpro, Nitron and the other big boys are in your country. Quoted from some other Forumers, Ohlins front and back: "bike went through complete transformation. when braking the nose is not diving anymore. when changing gear down with too high revs the back is not sliding so easily. driving straight over bumps doesnt feel at all acceleration feels faster through better grip and because the ride is smoother even the artificial high places on street (how you call them, from metal sometimes - where schools are) can be ridden over on 60 kmh without any feeling. and behavior in fast long corners is fantastic. smooth, stable, confident."
