kamalv Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 Mine wasn't exactly a planned purchase, unless you count several hours of lusting, reading reviews, and other bike porn. No ABS was a bit of a stickler for me, so I kept trying to keep my discipline and say 'no'. My steady steed is a Vstrom 650, and then one day it burned its stator and I was stranded without two wheels for a week. Oh human frailty... I walked into the local yamaha dealer, as I told my wife, just to look around. And we walked out with a spanking red FZ 07. My wife is a bit of an enabler when it comes to me, not sure if that is good or bad. And wow, being so used sitting high in the clouds on the vstrom and tippy toeing all year when stopped, riding the FZ first felt like a little toy. Everything felt tiny and I began to get conscious about whether I look like an elephant riding a bicycle(about 260 lbs with gear, 5' 11). But the little guy banished all such thoughts. Pretty much all thoughts. It just moved telepathically and it felt like I was just naturally settling into positions with minimal effort and really not much movement. One more thing - this one is quite a bit more stable on the highways. Crossing the big bridges in DC, earlier I would get blown away during Fall. On this one, the front tracks straight and there is no sudden displacement of lanes without meaning to. Unless you have experienced the difference between something like the Strom 650, where the front just moves a whole meter in strong cross winds, and this little guy, there is no overselling the reassurance and confidence it gives me. I will be riding the red FZ till, hopefully, end of November and then shift back to the Strom for all winter riding. Till then, it will be a blast. I haven't seen any on the road, but then most of the commuter bikers seem to prefer cruisers and their ilk. Or maybe, I just ride at the wrong times.
