Right side plastics not lining up

I'm at my wits and patience end guys. I'm replacing the grey side panels (the part with the scoops) because previous owner fucked them up. I also replaced the skinny middle grey plastic piece, and that shroud that goes around the has cap. Everything was going dandy until I tried putting them back on, left side went on ok, but now the right side won't line up with the bolts on the tank part. When I line up the plunger type plastic bolts to the holes on the bike the holes for the bolts that attach to the top part of the tank are way off. I've tried every which way to move it and just cannot get everything lined up to get bolted down. Is there a trick? What am I doing wrong, I'm assuming everything is installed properly if the left side went on pretty straight forward
