Rob's FZ-07 - Blurple's Gold Lining

Recommended Posts

Hi Fellow FZ Owners!

I'm relatively new to forum and have recently purchased a used 2015 Blurple FZ-07 back in April. Coming from 9 years of 600cc super sports (all street), I absolutely love the 07's low end torque-y engine! It's a fantastic middle ground between super sport and naked engineering and all for a reasonable price! Thanks Yamaha!

On to my moto: When I picked her up read 4770 miles on the odometer, had been dropped on one side by the previous owner, but also had some key upgrades I was looking for. Purchased from a local dealer (AK Motors) in Santa Clara, I felt like I was going to the pound to pick up a new dog that had a rough start. Needless to say, the good deal plus the mods were right for me to begin with, and in effect saved me a couple of thousand dollars in California new-buy fees and aftermarket parts.

After taking her home, riding around for a few weeks, and scouring FZ forums; the UPGRADE bug has hit me hard-freakin-core. But that is why I purchased her to begin with: to customize to my liking!

Now with the mods:

Previous owner installed:
-Yoshimura Full R77 Exhaust with black pipes
-Rear Fender Eliminator (brand? need to remove the license plate to determine)
-Frame Sliders (brand? Something basic and cheap)
-Black shorty levers with red adjuster (also generic)

Since I've owned it, I've added:
-Power Commander V
-Rizoma Zero Turn Signals, Front (DLR using Custom LED Relay)
-Custom LED Integrated Taillight (legit! Get it if you are interested in doing this mod.)
-Blacked-out Side Covers, Kick Plate, and the rear passenger pegs (the silver parts). Cheaped out and just used plasti-dip (matt black topped off with gloss) which worked great for the cover but not so much the kick plate. Since this photo my ankle rubbed the plasti-dip off the kick plate. The cover is completely fine. All good because rearsets are coming in soon!

Just Arrived & Next to be installed:
-Rizoma Conical Handlebars, 15mm rise, Gold
-Rizoma Lux Grips, Gold
-Rizoma Pegs B-Pro, Gold (For Passenger)
-Rizoma Bar End Sliders, Gold
-Rizoma Rear Spools, Gold
-Rizoma Engine Oil Filler, Gold
-Yamaha R6 Throttle Tube

Coming in the mail!!:
-Bonamici Rearsets, Black/Gold None (SUPER Excited about this)
-Puig Rear Reservoir Cover, Black

Future Upgrades:
-Ohlins Rear Shock
-Front Forks (Still haven't decided)
-Rizoma Gas Cap, Black
-K&N Air Filter (Snorkle or no-Snorkle TBD)
-DPM Frame Sliders
-Powder Coat Side Frame Panel
-Maybe: DPM Warrior Mirrors (expensive as ffff, we'll see)
-Maybe: Front fork Gaiters
-Maybe: Round Headlight Conversion (looked into several options)
-Maybe: Remove Radiator Guards, Powder Coat Radiator
-Maybe: Shorter Fender
-Maybe: Black Out Wheels (Powder Coat or Plasti-Dip)
-Maybe: Gold Wheels (Powder Coat)
-Maybe: White Out Gas Tank and Front Fender
-Maybe: XSR700 Gas Tank (Would have to pair with round headlight. It's expensive too of course)

Also been playing with photoshop to see what these concepts would look like. I'll get around to sharing some of those sooner or later.

@simbadc650 That's the plan! Unfortunately I will be out of town till next Sunday. So will not have an update with everything on for another week. But yea, we should definitely get a FZ group ride soon. I think @jchin3081 and others were talking about this before too.

@rxspeed Thanks man. Can't wait to see what direction you go with too!

@jchin3081 Haha no kiddin' man. I've been doing mad research on the approach and style I want to take with the FZ. Plan is to build and design as I go. If some part doesn't workout on my rig I'll just sell it. The trick with the Gold is to have enough where it highlights it all just right, but too much and it'll cross over and look tacky or too blinged out. We'll see where she goes.

Thanks for the interest guys! I was out of town for a week so I finally had some time to work on the FZ yesterday. Holy shit did I learn a lot. Some items worked, others didn't, and it's time to make adjustments. But before we get into that, let me show you what I did accomplish with some caveats, lol.

Successfully Installed
Rizoma Oil Plug (TP011G)
NOTE: For anyone who else who intendeds to purchase/install, you must disassemble the internal rings first before screwing the cap on. The black ring/tab for connecting fly-wire will get in the way of the engine cover while tightening on and scratch the metal. Use some pliers to pinch the silver "C" clip together and push up on the black tab to remove both pieces and install the plug separately. Keep in mind you'll need to do this each time you replace your oil. And yes, I foolishly minorly scratched my engine cover, not truly believing this would be an issue. Whatever though.

Rizoma Lux Grips (GR213G)
These came with 3 different Throttle Tube adapters (1 for 2-stroke engine, and 2 for normal sport). The Rizoma grip seemed to seal so closely together to it's own throttle tube, it appeared more of a challenge to take apart so I decided to try it first before even thinking of switching to the R6 Throttle Tube. So holding that install off for now.

Puig Rear Brake Reservoir Cover (7578J)
After searching deep within the interwebz and scouring Rear Brake Reservoir aesthetics (Billet Color caps, tanks, relocation (Vegabond), etc) I found this Puig cover and immediately thought it'd be perfect. I purchased directly (email) through a Puig vendor from Spain. Yeah huge pain, but once ordered it arrived quickly and I achieved the "wing" finish that sold me on it in the first place. I like how it blends with the frame of the FZ a lot.

Did NOT install
Rizoma Conical Handlebars (MA010G): WRONG SIZE. DOH! These bars are too large in the center (29mm) which will work for FZ-09 (and on their forum is where I read how amazing these bars are with their 15mm rise). So now I must return these.
Will replace with either: Rizoma 7/8 Handlebars which have 45mm rise or the Renthal Ultra Low Handlebars with 43mm rise. Also debating if I switch color to black (since the accents are gold) or stick with gold.

Rizoma Rear Spools (SC020): I learned very quickly there are no mounting holes on the spools and otherwise would require a threaded axle rod and spacers like the OES or the Womet-Tech rear spools offer. Then I found this forum's Spools thread and can't decided what option to go for: 1) Purchase OES or Womech Spools and use their spaces/rod 2) Find spacers and rods at home depot, but I am not sure of the correct sizing so this is a challenge 3) Return Rizoma Spools and the rear stand I bought from Amazon and seek different solution like SW-Motech Centerstand (expensive, god damn. Great reviews though), just buy a Padded/Swingarm Rear stand and keep it naked, T-Rex or Gillies (see spools thread) offer their adapters but I not too sure on reviews and look/style of either of them.

Rizoma B-PRO Foot Pegs (PE630): Adapter required and purchased separate. Of course. After hunting around I found them in Rizoma's catalog. They are different for either rider or passenger.
Peg Adapter for Rider: PE677B
Peg Adapter for Passenger: PE676A

Rizoma Racing Bar Ends (MA506): Waiting on new handlebars first.

R6 Throttle Tube (2C0262400000): See details on the Rizoma grips. May just resell this as I may now have no need for it.

Additional Issues
While messing with the handlebars, I stripped the screw that mounts the engine switch. It was a garbage philips screw and now I can't get it out, help!

Also stripped a mounting screw on the Rizoma Lux grip. It uses a size 4mm allen, any tips here?

If you made it this far, thanks for reading!!

Thanks! The grips work fantastic and feels good thus far. Really need to ride longer to write up a full review. Will provide after some more mileage. Lol I know a lot about chicken-strips, believe me. After taking a brake for 3 years my confidence hasn't fully returned and also I haven't been on some sweepers just yet, mostly commute on the freeway. Leaning more will happen!
Yes, I am ridiculously stoked to get all my pieces together and see the end result. It's taking HOURS of research and pricing comparisons.

As for Leon, I am not sure just yet. I placed the order through ebay and it says they (or He) is based out in Thailand. Once I get it in the mail, I'll sure post an update. In addition, I plan to remove the radiator guards altogether and paint the edges of the radiator. :D

I purchased them directly through MotoDRacing who is a vendor for Bonamici. MotoD make some pretty sweet CNC accessories as well. They import the rearsets from Italy, so it's been taking some time for them to get to me. So fars it's been 3 weeks but I called and it sounds like I may receive them next week.  www.motodracing.com

Just playing around about the chicken strips,  I really dont think public roads are the place to be leaning like that- too many hazards with too high a cost in risk with little margin for error.  Not to say I dont, I do. But I try not to, I just find I get in the groove having fun and next thing I know Im taking unecessary risk treating the streets like a track. This bike is just too fun sometimes!!
I cant find the puig brake cover so far after scoping yours out, mind sharing a link for me?

Yea leon had a couple pieces I was/am interested in but have yet to follow through on them because of. Thanks for being the pig, let us know how it goes. If it all turns well I imagine he(they) will have a bit more business from some of us here.

Yeah I heard that! I'm too old and learned my limitations cuttin hard around street corners before. I still have my moments but like you said I try not to test myself out on the street, but do want to have fun and LANE split!
As for Leon, do they have their own website? Im surely going to search after since the radiator guard looks legit and didn't plaster FZ/MT-0-FKn'-7 all over it like so many aftermarket parts do.

For the cover and after I found the Puig part, I looked EVERYWHERE to order it online and couldn't find any online dealer. I emailed Puig.tv directly and they referred me to a vendor in Spain who I purchased through email. I ordered the matt black as I am not a big fan of carbon fiber and its look. It will work with the FZ-07 just fine. Here are the details to the order:

-Vendor: VITO BIKES - MOTOACCES <vitobarnaadm@gmail.com> and yes they speak English.
-Puig Part#: 7578J (if you replace J with C, you will get Carbon Fiber)
-Costs: Part itself is 32,55€, then it cost them 36€ to ship (San Jose, CA) coming to a total of 68,55€ = $77USD
-Payment: Confirmed over email the shipping and total cost and then used PayPal. PayPal will convert the $US to EURO for you, so just [span]    [/span]input the Euro Cost. PayPal confirmed and I sent him the image of the confirmation just to be sure. All he said was thanks.
-Shipping: It arrived in about a week. So pretty fast directly from Spain!

If you guys really want more close up images of the cover, I can take some outside for clarity.

MODS UPDATE!

So after some serious back and forth, here's whats now set in motion:

-Rizoma Conical Handlebars, Returned due to incorrect size.
-Renthal Ultra Low 7/8 Handlebars, Gold, Purchased!
-Rizoma Rear Passenger Peg adapters Purchased so I can get my pegs on.
-Rizoma Gas Cap/Key, Black, Purchased!
-Womet-Tech Rear Spools System, Purchased! Will use the rod and spacers to mount Rizoma spools. Then sell off Womet Spools or
[span]    [/span]keep them.
-T-Rex Case Savers, Purchased! After looking at Yoshimura's (the sexiest but too rich for my blood, $350!? good lord), Woodcraft, R&G,
[span]    [/span]even generic Chinese models on Amazon, I think the T-Rex will match the look I desire.

Thats it for now, I gotta save some $ at this point. Haha. But doesn't mean I can't make my future list!
Future purchases:
-Round Headlight Conversion
-Fork Gaiters
-Ohlins Rear Shock
-Traxxion Dynamics Dampener Rod and GVE Kit (springs n all that)
-DPM Frame Sliders
-Aftermarket mirrors, still undecided. I can't believe companies charge $150 EACH for these things. Ugh.

Future Upgrades:
-K&N Air Filter (Snorkle or no-Snorkle TBD)

Just for your reference, I also have the PCV + Yoshi CF but I had a DNA Air Filter and lid. The feedback, input and results I got with the DNA seems to be the best combo so maybe give it a look too. I got them on ebay and the links for your reference are below:

DNA Air Filter:

I still haven't been able to take Dark-Y to a dyno run for a custom map so I'm currently using the map available at PCV website for the Akra+DNA filter & lid (22-065-008) that you can find here:

http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander/powercommander_maps_installs_product_buy_options.aspx?mdlyrid=22-065&make=28&model=682&make-n=Yamaha&model-n=FZ-07&year=2015&mk=28&mdl=682&yr=2015

Whenever I have a chance to take it to a dyno I will share my custom map and if you could do the same that would be awesome.

Keep up the work bud! :)

Wow, awesome Pancho! I was debating between both K&N and DNA filters as well and wasn't sure about which would perform better. Additionally, I also plan to get mine properly dyno'd once I get suspension parts in (not till later this year) so I can have a shop owner do it all at once. I don't even want to attempt to mess with installing and dialing in suspension parts. Thanks for finding them less expensive on ebay too! $180 without shipping costs and directly from their site seemed expensive to me. :P

Regarding the maps, yes lets definitely share once we get them tuned! I am currently using Dynopower's default Yoshimura map and still get a bit of popping (much less than before) when loosening up the throttle.
