Extended Warranty

Extended warranties are for suckers. The percentage of owners who will ever need to use it is so infinitesimally small that the company who underwrites the plan makes out like bandits.
You're buying a Yamaha, not a Yugo.
Aoutch, be easy on the kid, but you are right, there is absolutely no need for any extended warranty, for anything. If you really need it, buy it AFTER your manufacturer warranty expire.

So I hope more people see this. I bought my warranty upfront because I was able to get it at cost: $370 for 4 additional years.I was told that to buy the warranty at regular price from Yamaha later would be around $700-800. It was so cheap and for a new model bike I think thats totally worth it. [a style=height:20px;width:40px;min-height:20px;min-width:40px;opacity:0.85;border:none;line-height:0;background-image:url(data:image/png;" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/create/extension/][/a]

I got the extended warranty on mine as well. Extended 3 more years and if not used in that time period, full refund of purchase price. If something big happens I'm covered, while if it's a small issue I'll have it fixed myself.

I got a 2 year extended warranty, so I'm good for 3 total. I'll probably never use it, but it's cheap peace of mind and transferrable, so if I sell, it makes an attractive bonus to a potential buyer.

I am in the same boat as rotaryryan24. Commute 127 miles every day. On my other vstrom 650, the stator burned(along with rectifier needing replacement, around ~ 20K miles) two months after the first year of warranty and I had to pay $800 plus out of pocket to fix it all. Suzuki declined to cover it. So on this one, I figured I would get it, since I don't have the time to call 50 places for part numbers and prices in case something does go wrong. And with this little guys being so much fun, I am having second thoughts about keeping a big heavy bike like the Strom on which I am on tippy toes most of the time.

Came to ask if I should extend my factory 1 year warranty. I do all my own stuff so I wasn't really worried about reliability. I highly doubt the engine will grenade anytime soon.

I mean, we bought Yamahas not Harleys right! HAHA

I talk smack about Harley because my buddy owns a very successful chopper/harley shop and I forgot what part it is (something with the camshaft I believe) that if it isn't replaced it tears up the engine. Something small he says but it is labor intensive. I've seen bikes less than 3 years old being taken apart while my 35 year old Honda needs only basic stuff....

I had an issue on a previous bike at 50,000 miles thatwould have cost me $2000 to fix. The $300 I paid for that extended warranty was worth it.

That said, I only do the extended warranty if I know I am going rack up the miles, and I can negotiate it at or near cost.

It also come down to whether you have the funds in the bank to make repairs.

My most recent purchase came with a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty for $1.

The marketing and promotion department is much larger than the engineering department.

Anyone know if you can buy the extended warranty at any time? Had my bike for probably 18 months or so now. Forgot to look into extending the warranty after the first year because it hasn't given me any kind of sass.

Everything went braap.

I haven't met too many Harley riders that leave the engines stock. There are so many aftermarket kits for the Harleys it is mind boggling. They can bump those V-twins up to 120HP 120 ft-lbs torque. Most of these Yamaha FZ-07s will probably never see 20,000 miles. They will either be wrecked or neglected long before they reach mileage where something would break.
How many miles on your 35 year old Honda?

If you have money to spare, then sure, why not get one. But let's look at it this way: if an item continuously broke down, there's no way a company would offer an extended warranty since they would be losing quite a bit of money. There's always a story of someone getting screwed over and used an extended warranty, but these are probably statistically insignificant. But to each his own.

You can buy the extended warranty any time during the first year. If you are at eighteen months then it is too late. I would not worry. I did not buy one night the odds are pretty good that I made the right decision.

Good to know. I probably wouldn't have bought it, but it's nice to know what your options are.

Just rolled over 20,000 miles. No real issues so far. I don't really ride that hard, but the conditions of my riding are pretty hard. A lot of stop and go traffic, I've probably feathered the clutch for a good 8,000 miles or more and sat for quite a few hours in hot summer traffic.

Everything went braap.

I allowed myself to be suckered into it. I initially declined it. Until I heard unlimited miles, then I grilled them on what it would really cover (Which is EVERYTHING). I also felt it was unnecessary, but figured with the miles Im going to put on it a little extra piece of mind was worth it. Tis my DD and I as well do 100 miles a day.

I am debating if i should extend, it's like $500 for 3 years.

I am pretty handy though so i'm probably going to decline.

the 1980 cb750 that i built into a cafe/brat has 28k miles which is pretty low for being such an old broad! i do need to replace the clutch plates though!

i just sold a 2003 sv1000 with 30k on it and it was an abused track bike when i got it!

all of my bikes have been japanese, old and i have no idea what kind of care the previous owner took of them and they ran pretty well.

except when my ninja had a short because the owner for some reason spliced the ignition into the cdi box and left me with a mess!!! that took a week with a voltmeter to find that problem!

I never buy extended warranties on anything. If you add it all up I have probably saved enough to buy a new bike. I have definitely saved enough to fix anything that goes wrong with it. That is my opinion anyway.

I never buy them either, honestly mostly anything that goes wrong is not under warranty either like stuff in the gear box or whatever. Id rather save the cash.

The extended warranty through Yamaha is 5 years unlimited mileage and it 100% covers the gearbox. Not the clutch, I'm sure.

I was told by a friend who works at a dealership, he said that majority of the stuff that goes wrong with your bike is not under warranty. My warranty ended last week but i didn't renew it. Who knows if its worth it though.

Majority of stuff that wouldn't be covered are normal wear and tear items: clutch, brake pads, brake lines, cables, not following service intervals. If you get the extended warranty, it would cover manufacturer defects. If you blow out a trans and they can prove it was your fault because you downshifted into 1st at 80mph and you somehow didn't crash (your RPMs would be about 17k lol), no, then it's not covered. But if a poorly tightened bolt gets into the trans from not be assembled correctly, then it will be covered.
Since your first year of ownership is up, you couldn't purchase the extended warranty even if you wanted to (unless your friend has the hook up).

I received an email about extending my warranty out after it expires.

Contemplating on extending it... I got seriously burned when I extended out my Harley's warranty over my loan period of 5 years. Damn warranty was $2,200 Bucks! this one seems pretty darn reasonable for at most $590.

I'm gonna wait until December to see if I am going to keep her first... have a mini me on the way so the riding will be limited for a while.

May sell her off and buy a cheap project bike for the garage and work on it from the ground up.  Get rid of some monthly payments.

I used to by extended warranties... and, I NEVER once even came close to making my money back on repairs. A total waste for me! But, as they say, "Your 'dollars' may vary." Hehehe
