How To: Installing Euro signals (works for led's too)

One of the things that bothered me right from the start are the big orange watermelons North American bikes have.

Some opt for small LED flashers but I thought I'd score some Euro signals. I figured that if people replace them here, some will also replace them over the Atlantic and they would be able to sell a set to me. Forum member @livestrong came through in no time and set me up with a practically new set. Awesome, thanks man !! He even sent me a box of Belgian Chocolate as a surprise (see on the kitchen table). I owe him big time !

The wires were cut as expected, which is not a big deal because the wiring at the front is different anyway. The blue wires are for our DRL's which Euro bikes don't have. All I had to do is some soldering.

Taking off the head light unit

This is a pretty straight forward process. There are to Frankenstein bolts (one on each side at the top of the unit) that you can unscrew using an allen key (red arrow in pic).
The unit tilts forward and you have access to the wiring. There are 4 plugs, two for the signals, one for the head light and one for the aux light. They are color coded so there is no worry that you fumble up when you put things together again.
The unit rests on a bracket at the bottom. No screws are involved so you can just lift the unit off.

The rear end

Normally you would have to disassemble the rear of the bike to get access to the tail section. Not difficult but tedeious and there are a lot of screws and bolt involved. I did this a couple of times. Once for the tail tidy and then again for the mesh installation. I wasn't looking forward doing it again, but luckily the tail tidy results in more slack in the wiring, I could do the job on the bike, without removing all the body work. Just look for the wires under the passenger seat and feed them towards the back.

The stalks

The rubber signal stalks are secured with a plastic clip that you can simply remove. Then gently pull and pry and you're done.
The rear stalks have a extra plastic ring. don't forget to put that back in when things back together again. (see pic)

The wiring

The wiring is all color coded and Yamaha uses the same color for both sets. Green & Black for the right side and Brown & Black for the left. The blue wires at the front are for the daytime running lights. I cut them and insulated them. The head light and aux light is on while driving anyway so I see no need for them.

Remember to use the correct signal for the front and the back. They have screws to hold the lens cap in place and you want the screw to face downwards.

I stripped the wires, color matched them and soldered them. I used some single wire electrical heat shrink sleeves to prevent future shorts. Remember to put put the sleeves on first and keep them away while soldering. They will start shrinking when the are too close. The pictures will explain.  I finished the job by wrapping things up with electrical tape.
If wires are too short, you can disassemble the rubber stalk part first to expose more wire. Just remember the correct assembly order because you will have to slide everything over the long wire (bike side) before soldering.

I am very happy with the result. I do have the Euro fast blink syndrome, but only when signalling left or right. The hazzard light function still has a normal slower frequency.  I might replace the relais or experiment with different bulbs. They are 10 Watt 15S type bulbs with bayonet base. I might try some silver coated ones to get rid of the orange.

I am extremely happy with the result.   8-)

Looks great Guru! Nice job.
If I had known that you needed an other relay I should have send it also, because I replaced it for the Led blinkers. If you can't find one, let me know something I will send te relay to you (if it should work of course)

They look awesome! I still prefer the LEDS, but that's an excellent compromise.

Relay, if you decide to go that route, you know the thread :)

Dank je wel! Ik wist ook niet dat ze sneller zouden knipperen. Als je het relay wilt opsturen, graag. Dat is wel zo makkelijk. Zeg maar wat je er voor wilt hebben, dan maak wel wat geld over.  :)

Agreed, big improvement, but I still prefer LEDs

Which is a good thing!  What would be the point of modding if every bike ends up looking the same in the end.  :)

Hey guys. Just got a White 07 here in Brooklyn NY. Not a huge fan of the stock signals. The euro ones are totally more of what I'm looking for.

Any tips/links on how I can get a full set sent over to NYC? Can I just order them from somewhere?

I posted an add and @livestrong, who lives in Belgium sold them to me. He upgraded to LED signals. A lot of Euro bikes are being modded and they end up with spare ones.

Maybe you can ask @689twin. He's from Finland. Maybe he did the same, I don't know. Here is his intro.

I want to do this if you provide me the numbers, you can look them up here: parts I can look them up myself but don't want to be responsible for ordering the wrong parts.I want to do this when we use the following steps: I look for availability and the price, you pay the price by PayPal, I order the parts, when they arrive I ship them to you and then you do a second payment for the shipping costs, because it's not easy to calculate how much it would be.
regards

This sounds like a great option! I, too, don't like the "vibrating cantaloupes".  (rofl)  My question is, I guess is for Guru. You mentioned you still have Euro fast blink syndrome. Is the blink as fast as with the LEDs?  The signals you installed look really cool, much better than stock ones. Also, are new ones available from Europe or do we have to find someone modding in Europe willing to ship their used ones to us?

Yes, the stock Euro flasher comes standard with 10W amber bulbs. The North American comes with brighter 27W bulbs. So they basically flash twice as fast (as if one bulbs is kaput). I have ordered some silver 27W bulbs in Taiwan (on eBay) but they are not here yet. And I am not sure if they will actually fit in the housing because they are slightly larger, but it is worth a try. I will let you know once I have them, which will be any day now. If it doesn't work, I will get another relais.
New ones are available at Yamaha dealers in Europe and Japan, but they are very expensive. Your best bet is find someone there that upgraded to LED's and is willing to sell their stock ones.

The silver bulbs are just to change the color though, not the fast flash, right?

No, the silver is just a coating on top of the amber bulb. So they flash orange.
They are 27 Watt so they should work (providing that they fit). I choose the silver coating because I don't like the amber shade you get in the clear lens when using amber bulbs.

I received my bulbs from Taiwan today. They don't fit :(

So I guess I am going for a slow blink relais.

Hope this thread is active.
Guru,
I love the look of the Euro signals too and installed them on my bike. They look nice and much much better than stock or any LEDs I've see so far (my preference). I got these replicas from China (http://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Yamaha-FZ-07-MT-07-MT-01-V-MAX1700-Turn-Signal-Indicator-Light-/121798794264?var=&hash=item0) and they work really good, except for the fast blinking. Have you installed a relay to slow them down? If so could you please point me to the right brand and how to install?
Thanks much!!

I bought the Euro signals from a member in Europe and asked him to send the relay too. You can also just order a relay that is made to work with led's, like this one:

You take out the existing relay and replace it with the new relay.

Here is te location of the relay:

Your turn signals are blinking fast because you disabled the front running lights.
The fast blinking is the bike telling you to check for a burnt out light bulb.

Not quite. The Euro bulbs are a lower wattage, that's why they hyperflash. The running lights on the US bikes are on a different circuit.

@kanchanj88, if there is a Cycle Gear nearby, they have the LED-capable relay needed for low wattage bulbs. Or you can get one from any number of vendors. Most are plug-and-play.

CustomLED is one of the more popular ones if you have to go online.

That's correct. Over all, after having my Euro turn signals for almost a year now, I can say that I like the fast blinking better. I am telling myself that they are more visible to other drivers. So for now, no relay swap for me.

The euro bulbs are lower resistance, they are still 5W signals they just run a slightly higher amperage through the LEDs
