My guide to staying cool while riding this summer!

Recommended Posts

So, it's hot as heck and riding my motorcycle feels like I am sitting in a blast furnace. To combat the effects of heat and to make riding more ejoyable, I have ordered and been testing/enjoying the first three products below from Revit. The vest, collar and wrist coolers were worn by me on a 740 mile round trip last week. The temps were between 88 degrees when I left in the AM, 100 degrees mid day, and 106 degrees when I returned home early evening. Temps on the actual freeway were even higher, my bike guage showed a max temp of 110, some of this may have been bike error, or some may have been due to the heat buildup on the road reflecting backup to me.

I would not have been able to make the trip in one day without the Revit cooling protection. It worked great, cooled me off and lasted for 4- hours before I had to stop for gas, go into the restroom and re soak the material in the sink.

I used the Revit Airwave Jacket and wore a polyester tshirt under the cooling vest. When soaking the vest, neck cooler and wrist cuffs, I let them hang for ten minutes to allow excess water to drip off before wearing them.

I was surprised to get 4 hours of cooling from the vest. the cuffs actually only gave me 2 hours of max cooling effect, but still gave considerable cooling after that point.

I am now a full believer in the Revit line of cooling equipment. I am riding with at least the vest on ea ride now, and really like the neck and wrist coolers as well as they cool the pressure points in the neck and wrists. I do wear shorter gloves when wearing the Wrist coolers.

The products by Hyperkewl have not been tested by me yet but are lower priced and certainly better than no cooling at all.

what perfect timing, Cruizin! I got into work today and my back was sweating - it really sucks to start off the work day with a sweaty back. Does your poly shirt get really wet? Do you think the neck and wrist pieces alone are worthwhile or is the vest necessary?

I would keep a few work shirts at the office and then switch shirts when you get to work.

For just a short ride, maybe the cuffs alone would work. But yes, you will get wet either way because these items are soaked in water then you wear them.

But water smells alot better than sweat, right?

Cool, just got back from an hour plus commute home in traffic, i could have used that today!

I used just the vest yesterday and was missing the neck and cuffs. Wore just the neck today and while it helped, I missed the vest.

When riding to a meeting or something, I wear the cuffs. they still help.

But when riding for fun, I wear the cuffs, the neck and vest coolers and man, I feel cool refreshed and comfy!

I really want to wear my leather jacket year-round but it's WAY too hot even though my Astars GP Plus R is perf. So, I've been using a mesh jacket for the last couple months. Cruizin, if you have the time, I'd love to hear your feedback on using this stuff with leather.

How hot does it actually get in norcal? Here, it's like a blast furnace, no way to ride comfortably without cooling when it's over 95 degrees.

I'm not in norcal anymore :(   ...been living in Michigan last 8 years...at work it gets no lower than 90° even in the middle of winter and we must wear long pants, long sleeves, work boots and hard hat all day...

I run 2 vacuum brazing ovens at work

Last week we rode through the middle of California during the heat wave; it was triple digit temps. We used squeeze bottles on ourselves as we rode. They stayed handy behind the wind screens.  :)

Update, I used my buddies FLY Racing cooling vest yesterday and it was good for about two hours max. I'm sticking with my Revit vest.

I will never ride summer months without my cooling gear, totally loving it. If it's hot where you are, click the buy buttons next to the gear above and hook yourself up.

Looks like a fine product although here in Fl. I usually don't take long rides and I just wear the self wicking type shirts. The air goes through them and feels cool when it hits the sweat underneath but as Cruizin said, water smells better than sweat and just maybe it'll work better than the shirts I wear. I could wear one under a breathable, wicking shirt, right?

  • 2 weeks later...

Update. Lost one of my cooling cuffs and I'm pretty pissed off about it. Calling Revzilla to see what I can do. Probably have to order another pair.

The Revit cooling vest and neck cooler are both working extremely well. Getting good cooling out of em on my summer rides and my buddies have all ordered them as well because when we go riding, I was the only one who wasn't miserable from the heat.

Yesterday was 99 degF w/ about 60% humidity, making for a heat index of 116 degF. I rode with a jacket and pants and no cooling vest for 3 hours. As long as we kept moving it was no big deal. I guess I'm just used to it like norcal.

Here in Memphis you can't really get out early in the morning to beat the heat, because it's still 85 degF at 5AM and the humidity at that time of day is 95%+. Pick your poison, heat or humidity, either way the heat index is 100+ ha.

I'm actually looking for a cooling vest for running. Running 20 miles in this heat gets to be quite cumbersome. The running vests are way different though. You actually freeze them overnight and they are made of basically (from what I can tell) the same gel that is used in ice packs. The concept with these is to pre-cool your core down by wearing the vest for about an hour before heading out. You take the vest off before actually running so there is no additional weight to carry. The effects are said to last 60-90 mins of running. I would expect that since riding is less strenuous, the effects could potentially last even longer. I'll have to test that out. If I end up getting one I'll certainly try it out on the bike as well and let you guys know what I think.

I would also like point out that it is a really good idea to use a camelback for water when it's hot out when riding...nothing kills a ride like heat stroke or dehydration...I use my water purse by putting the bladder in my backpack and running the tube thru the headphone cord rubber grommet...I can drink all the water in 4-5hrs...

I've been using this jacket for a few days now and I'm no longer sweaty when I get to work. Previous to this I was using an AStars T-GP R Air mesh/textile. The problem with all mesh jackets is that while the mesh areas flow a lot of air, the textile parts flow nothing at all.

This Rukka has the nicer look of a tight weave Cordura textile but is actually a knit Cordura.  The entire jacket is made out of this knit Cordura AFT material.  As a result, I can feel air throughout the entire jacket, including the lower sleeve, back of the forearm, shoulders, and the entire front torso.  Most mesh jackets use woven textile in these areas for strength, at the expense of blocking air.

The Good:
Best airflow I've had in any jacket I've owned so far, including the T-GP R Air.
D30 Air armor in shoulder and elbow cover a huge area and are quite thick but flexible.  These seem to have larger venting holes than the D30 pieces I have in my Icon 1000 Vigilante
Genuine Cordura throughout should hold up as well as any other textile option
Entire jacket is double stitched
Volume adjusters at the cuff and bicep
Biggish reflective patches on sleeves and back
Suuper nice inside feel.  The liner is the best I've felt.  The shoulder and elbow areas get an even nicer light plush fabric, very soft.
From a subjective POV, I really dig the look and fit.  It's one of the few slimmer fitted jackets that still have an understated look.  This grey one matches Fizzy's liquid graphite tank.

Gripes:
You need to order 1 - 2 sizes smaller than normal.  I'm an EU 50 in Astars and had to order a 46 for this (Revzilla's gear geeks helped me get it right the first time).
Doesn't come with a back protector, which should be included in a $429 jacket.
Would've liked the zippers to be YKK, especially on the cuff would be nice to have locking zips.  They're fine, just not as smooth as YKKs.
I don't care for the collar.  Even with a longish neck, I still find it uncomfortable for the collar to touch my neck.  So, I don't zip this all the way up.
Costs as much as some full leather jackets.
