How to install $12 bar end mirrors

These are the mirrors  - Amazon - $12.29

Parts you will need:

5/8x7/8x1" steel spacer - $1.80 at Ace

Tools you will need:

8mm allen wrench
4mm allen wrench
3/16" allen wrench
18mm (I think) box end (to remove old mirrors)
band saw/hack saw/etc
sand paper (moderately course, enough to debur steel)

Step 1: take your bar ends off of the bike using an 8mm allen wrench.

Step 2: cut your spacer into 2x 0.42" lengths using a saw.  This is to accommodate the thickness of the mirror mount.  Note: you can go as short as 0.30" on the left hand grip, but you MUST have at least 0.40" for the spacer on the throttle side to prevent binding with the throttle tube.

Step 3: sand the rough edges and lube the throttle tube side.

Step 4: loosen the 4mm allen screws on the mirrors to remove the provided bar end expansion anchors and screws.  You will also need to remove the black washer that the screw passes through.

Step 5: tighten the mirror mount onto the stock bar end just enough so that the bar end still rotates freely.

Step 6: screw the mirror/bar end/ spacer assembly into the respective ends of your handlebars.  Make SURE the throttle rotates freely, this is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL.  You do not want a sticky throttle, and it is not my fault if you don't ensure it has no resistance before you ride.

Look at how much better that view is!!

Step 7: adjust the mirrors to your liking.  If needed, tighten the ball joint Allen screw with a 3/16" Allen wrench.

Step 8: remove your stock mirrors using an 18mm box end (someone please verify, gremlins stole mine so I had to use a vice grips).

Step 9: go for a quick ride to ensure you still have no throttle tube interference and that your mirrors are adjusted to your liking.

Nice write up. I'm on the fence about the looks. How do they perform versus the stock ones? I have issues with mine and seeing well.

If you're serious about seeing behind you, then bar-end mirrors are actually the way to go. Yeah, you have to avert your eyes a little for half a second, but if you're in a situation where that's not safe, seeing what's behind you is the least of your problems.

With the stock mirrors, I see my arms and shoulders; With the bar-end mirrors I can even see the rear turn signals and my tail bag, plus anything else back there.

I've run bar-end mirrors for thousand and thousands of miles on 3 different bikes and I'm completely spoiled. I've even changed bars before just to be able to run them. Once you get them, you'll be glad you did and you'll never look back. (see what I did there?) ;)

I'll be honest I was a little worried about having to look further down but the vision I get is FAR better than the stockers. I can see a car in the right lane behind me from my left mirror. As a bonus they also make the bike look 100x sexier.

Nobody makes a 5/8x7/8x1/2 spacer? I'm too lazy to hack through 1/8" of steel with my rusty hack saw!

I think the mirrors are 17mm. Only know cause that's the biggest wrench I have and I was gonna be mad if I had to go out and buy a new wrench just for that.

Why did you leave the mirror stalks on the handlebar?

Also, bullets out or forward?

That picture was taken before I had decided on keeping them. Mirror stalks are gone now.
Bullets out :)

The red things are Hella Super-tones. The belt and pouches are my my gun belt and magazine pouches. I was headed to a competition pistol match.

Sheesh, I can't get the mirror stalk on the right side off. I don't have a 18mm wrench, only sockets :( I tried using monkey pliers for about 10 minutes but just ended up scratching the thing without it even moving a hair.

BROTIP: dont use pliers to remove the mirror stalks.
BRONUS: buy copper spacers instead of steel for an easier time in cutting.

Which super tones kit did you use for your bike? I was looking at using them but was unsure if one would be loud enough

I think there are only 2 kits right? The original red and the new yellow ones. I had these in my garage for forever. Had them on my 06 Subaru but never mounted them on anything after that. Figured it was an easy and cheap project for the big to add some functionality. I have one mounted on each side, which is perfect to blast people not looking in their blind spot and trying to merge into you. They are plenty loud. Much louder than stock.

Welp...I just had an idiot moment.
The right hand side mirror is left hand threaded. Thanks to @quixote !!! He messaged me and informed me of this.

"Strange and kind of counter intuitive, but true. I guess Yamaha figures if you drop it on that side and hit the mirror it will unscrew itself before it destructs.
Don't mean to insult your intelligence here, just hoping to offer something that might help. ~Quixote"

Just an update. I'm using this steel spacer and it worked great with no modifications.

Sorry to bump old thread, but did you get the 5/8ths - 1/2 inch or 1inch spacer?!
