BruceWayne911 Posted October 28, 2020 Share Posted October 28, 2020 Hi, My name is Aaron. I recently passed the MSF course and now Im looking to buy my first motorcycle this winter(Jan/Feb). I've been looking at the Kawasaki z650, Suzuki sv650, and the Yamaha MT-07. I very interested in the MT-07 because of the playful cross plane engine and the high levels of torque. I a little worried about pulling the trigger on purchasing the MT-07 because of the negative things I hear about the suspension. I'm 5'8 and 300lbs, am I to heavy to ride the MT-07? You may have to go with a shock with a higher spring weight, if you do you can dial it in exactly. longrider1951 Posted October 29, 2020 Share Posted October 29, 2020 you can adjust the rear spring preload which basically makes the rear shock stiffer for heavier people. I haven't had that problem (maybe because I don't do wheelies) but I have noticed that the front dives a lot when braking, a lot of times I can even notice it just by letting off the throttle since it has a lot of engine braking. I have an Expert race license which means I ride like a total wanker and push it WAY beyond it's design capabilities (not at all easy), mostly while over ridding my talent level, lol. And there are plenty of other real sized people out there with these too. I fell in love with the MT-07 because of the engine. I hear its pure fun to ride and to hooligan around on. Having fun while riding is the most important. At some point you may well decide to upgrade the suspension but that holds true for any of these grocery getter bikes. Any specific advice and or parts you recommend for upgrading the suspension? I hear you can already adjust the rear shock. Also I'm definitely gonna go through truckloads of money in motorcycling. FZWes Posted October 30, 2020 Share Posted October 30, 2020 Arron, a men our size, 5'11" 250 lbs are just about at the limits of an FZ07. I've seen pictures of me on my FZ and its not too flattering. robbo10 Posted October 30, 2020 Share Posted October 30, 2020 I would not worry about how you look, it is more about how you feel on the bike and how the bike copes with you on it. Mostly that is about suspension front and rear. If you get the opportunity to test ride I would go for it. (You might get the chance to see yourself in shop windows.... !)
