Heavy Set New Rider Interested in MT-07 (5'8 300lbs)

Hi,

My name is Aaron. I recently passed the MSF course and now Im looking to buy my first motorcycle this winter(Jan/Feb). I've been looking at the Kawasaki z650, Suzuki sv650, and the Yamaha MT-07. I very interested in the MT-07 because of the playful cross plane engine and the high levels of torque.

I a little worried about pulling the trigger on purchasing the MT-07 because of the negative things I hear about the suspension. I'm 5'8 and 300lbs, am I to heavy to ride the MT-07? Are there any big/heavy set riders who have ridden the MT-07?

I'm 5' 10" and 220 Lbs. once I sorted the rear preload all was good. You may have to go with a shock with a higher spring weight, if you do you can dial it in exactly. I'm very happy with the ride and performance of my 07.

You can adjust the suspension on the MT-07? Or do I have to buy a aftermarket part?

you can adjust the rear spring preload which basically makes the rear shock stiffer for heavier people. I went from +2 (stock) to +5. I think you can go up to +8 or+9, I really don't remember the top number.

If that doesn't work there's a lot available in the after market.

I hear the main problem is the front suspension. AKA the death wobble.

I haven't had that problem (maybe because I don't do wheelies) but I have noticed that the front dives a lot when braking, a lot of times I can even notice it just by letting off the throttle since it has a lot of engine braking. I weigh half of what you do so I'd imagine you'd notice it even more.

I'm 5'10" and have raced/ridden mine weighing from 240-285lbs. I have an Expert race license which means I ride like a total wanker and push it WAY beyond it's design capabilities (not at all easy), mostly while over ridding my talent level, lol.

Like me, you'll never regret ownership.

So at 5'8 300lbs the MT-07 shouldn't be a problem for me?

Absolutely not. And there are plenty of other real sized people out there with these too. Of the three you list (I've owned all 3) you've picked the best option.

Yeah I feel the same way. I really like the look of the SV650 and I love the setup and tech with the Kawasaki z650. I fell in love with the MT-07 because of the engine. I hear its pure fun to ride and to hooligan around on. Having fun while riding is the most important. Thanks for the advice MT-07 it is🏍

Those are both great bikes but as pure hooligans both fall short of the Yamaha.  At some point you may well decide to upgrade the suspension but that holds true for any of these grocery getter bikes. As a matter of fact, I'll bet you hemorrhage a ton of money on the sport as you progress. Welcome.

P.S. Some call me Mr. Conservative...

Any specific advice and or parts you recommend for upgrading the suspension? I hear you can already adjust the rear shock.

Also I'm definitely gonna go through truckloads of money in motorcycling. Everything is expensive as hell.

Just ride it and get used to it while you use the search feature of this website. Let it tell you what it needs based in how you get along, your riding style and skill level and your checkbook.

Does it need anything? Nope. Will you want everything? Hell yes.

Arron, a men our size, 5'11" 250 lbs are just about at the limits of an FZ07. I've seen pictures of me on my FZ and its not too flattering. This being you first bike consider a Yamaha cruiser.

Its just a suggestion, from another big rider.

I hear you but I'm not interested in crusiers.

I don't care if I look like the Michelin Man on my FZ-07.  I'm on it to enjoy the ride, not be concerned about how I look having a good time. 👍

I would not worry about how you look, it is more about how you feel on the bike and how the bike copes with you on it.  Mostly that is about suspension front and rear.  If you get the opportunity to test ride I would go for it. (You might get the chance to see yourself in shop windows.... !) I was aiming for an SV650 but Yamaha came to my rescue. What a bike! (Still, after 5 years for me)

If you don't mind me asking whats your height and weight?

I'm 6'3", and honestly I think the height issue is probably the only limiting factor.  As others have said, adjustments can be made (even aftermarket if necessary) for weight.
