Get An Exhaust!! (Akrapovic Ti)

I have had my FZ-07 for a little over three years now. This is my first bike and I have loved it since the day I got it. I did the basic mods like blinkers, integrated back lights, tidy kit, and new mirrors right away. Since the day I got the bike I have contemplated getting an exhaust.

I have read review after review and listened to too many sound clips over these years. I kept putting it off. I just felt like I couldn't warrant spending the money on it, felt like it wasn't needed. This is mostly because I kept looking at the best exhausts (which were very expensive). As well as assuming it's going to be so hard to install a new one.

Once I got my stimulus check I finally told myself it's time. Better now then never. So I finally decided on the Akra ti and getting a flash ecu tune kit. Definitely a pricey combo, but I figured I waited so long, I'm going to do it right.

The installation was no where as hard as I thought it would be. I am not very savvy with these sort of things, but you follow a youtube video or two and you're good to go. The only hard part was taking the baffle out, which was not a fun experience.

Akra Ti Thoughts:

Now I can't speak for the other exhausts, since I've only heard the Akra ti in person but this thing is amazing. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was like a brand new bike. The sound that comes out is so mean. I do have the baffle out, and didn't test it with it in so I cant speak for that. The videos really don't do it justice. This exhaust in addition with putting a new mapping through the ecu flash changed the bike. I really feel like I'm riding a different bike, and keep finding excuses to go out and ride it. It is loud, but I don't think I'll have any issues with people unless I'm really an asshole about it.

I'm writing this out because I'm sure people are like me and keep researching and contemplating if they should get one. I've seen people say that the exhaust is one of the first mods you should get. I now understand and wish I didn't wait 3 years to experience this. JUST DO IT!

Bonus Pics: 1st pic wheels just nice and cleaned. Second pic literally 1 second after they've been cleaned. These damn yellow wheels lol, love em but they kill me with how easy they get dirty.

I think it’s like going from a sewing machine sound to the incredible Hulk on steroids - screaming. Love it. I have the same one.

I have the Akra carbon fiber. People often roll their windows up as I'm coming up beside them so I know mine sounds bad-ass. 🙉

It was when I saw kids holding their ears as I went by that made me think it was a bit much. I want kids to be happy to see motorcycles like I was (and still am lol 😎.) I have the cut mt09 baffle in now. It’s not the same as no baffle but it’s better than stock.

I have thought about this. Does seem like the best of both using the 09 baffle. Maybe in the future but for now I'm rocking the mean sound.

I hear yah! It sounds sic. I’d recommend looking over this thread (below) for baffle options. There is also the RC8 baffle.

Although I went the Graves route - I had a similar experience. Owned the bike for 2 years before I put an exhaust on and I definitely wish I did it sooner. As soon as I started it up after the install, it put a smile on my face haha. I was stuck between the Akra and Graves, but 2WDW told me to run with the baffle out on both and from the videos I heard online, the Graves sounded a little quieter with the baffle out. Either way, these bikes sound incredible once you get rid of the stock exhaust.

It's always better to experience stock for awhile, than you can really appreciate what new exhaust sounds like.  After 3 years of owning it, now you get to love it all over again like it's a new bike :D

I think the term they would use would be "obnoxious".   Makin' a lot of friends for us there, right?

I tend to react that way when some straight pipe Harley guy pulls up beside me.

I'm on board with you.  I started riding in 1969 and saw more riding trails closed up by the land owners because of noise from riders who think loud pipes were faster and better.   Same has happened with ATVs.  Farmers are tired of the noise as well as the damage from unthinking riders, usually the same ones.

Everyone take this for what it is, not some rant, but a warning of what the future could hold...

A number of countries around the world have outlawed anything but OEM exhausts and I think California is enforcing the requirement for DOT approved exhausts.   This is what happens when riders have no consideration for other people who are in the majority and vote.  They get laws enacted.   We are affected.

Now getting a bit louder and having good tone usually isn't obnoxious, it is going to excess that is causing problems.  Going up around 96 dB is still reasonable, good volume and tone.  The near open pipes going upward of 120 dB will eventually force states to consider enforcing the DOT law.   Vance-Hines had to pay a huge fine for selling "closed course only" exhausts while knowing they were being used on street bikes.   Others have run into the same situation.   Eventually it is possible we will not be able to modify the stock pipes or install aftermarket unless they meet DOT.  We have ourselves to blame and that forces us to police ourselves.

If you must run open, do it at a track... although some tracks require meeting sound limits too, due to neighbor complaints.   AMA Motocross has sound limits too.  Take the hint and don't go totally crazy on noise and think it makes one "bad ass", it makes you an "enemy" that needs to be taken off the streets by that person rolling up the window.

My bike came with an IXIL system on it so I lucked out, but if it hadn’t, exhaust and tune would have been the first mod I made. It is criminal the way Yamaha stifles the beautiful tones that emanate from that cross plane firing order, but that is the way most stock systems are.

I think by the time those laws would be introduced over here in the Midwest, we may all be on electric scooters anyway.

Imho and to avoid hearing loss, wear ear plugs when riding a bike with loud exhaust.

Hearing loss is cumulative to exposure and permanent.

Trust me on this one.

What? Can't hear what you're saying...

I strongly agree, and even suggest ear plugs with quiet exhaust.  Wind noise can be louder than you think.  I've had one earplug come out while I was riding, and not realize it.  When I got home and took out the other one, it was obvious that the plugless ear was down a few dB.

Finally got the Delkevic full exhaust with the 18" stainless muffler on the XSR and fired it up.   Virtually perfect tone and volume as is with the baffle in it.  We could stand there and talk in normal voices in the shop, 12x20' building, doors closed - it's cold and snowy out there.   Even reving it was reasonable.  I got what I wanted in tone and volume, and I doubt it's going to offend too many pedestrians when I ride through town.  I'll be able to ride by the police without consideration for noise.  That's perfect.

Of course I'm going to have to pull the quiet core to see how it sounds without it, but I seriously doubt I will leave it out  This exhaust has that street rod level sound I was looking for.

I would say the only negative is that it is an old school long exhaust, but that's okay by me.  Now I have to get a better hanger set up.   I did aluminum hangers to start, easy to cut and drill.   I did a double support, the way they had them mount to the foot peg at the front of the can seems insufficient.   I need to go to stronger steel flat stock now and will probably weld them up at the upper mount to hold the triangulation.

FWIW that exhaust has a decibel reading of around 78 dB when idling and around 86 dB when reved up around 6000 rpm, so not too loud, but does sound good.   Exactly what I wanted.   It has the quiet core in it as comes with the exhaust.  I got a quieter core in the event I needed it.  I'd guess it probably muffles the exhaust down to near stock.
