3d Scanning

Season delay sucks.  Hope everyone is safe and healthy.

One good thing is it does allow me some time to put some finishing touches on some of the bikes and some of that will trickle down to new parts for customers also.    Stay tuned.

A little progress last time on making a replacement panel for the air box.  Plan is to seal the top and allow it to pull air in from the side with filter material to keep the gross stuff out.

Just a small lip flange on the outside to catch the air box and allow it to either be glued or fastened on the flange where I cut the airbox off at.

So I guess people think there was some sort of “Intellectual Property” in an expanded metal screen poorly bent over the the stock air box.

Here is exactly why you should be careful in who you work with.  This the results of 5 laps on track.  This was a “fresh” MA motor.

Apparently scanning a stock airbox and making a part that would truly fit and while allowing guys to use filter media is bad.

If you see a poorly designed part in my eyes it’s ok to improve it.  I wouldn’t want that on my bike and I wouldn’t put it on a customer bike.

The exercise was in learning surface modeling and 3D print a part that could use filter material for this customer.

There was no scoop, I planned to reuse the one the customer paid for since it went over the airbox on the outside edge.

To be clear I don’t need to copy anyone’s parts.  This is a hobby of mine.  I work for a small 1.8B Euro a year company and as the Engineering manager.  The company makes replacement parts for industrial machines; forklifts, aerial lifts, small earth moving, etc.

Managing the design and manufacture of replacement parts is literally what I do 50+ Hours a week.

Some shops are using crayons and producing subpar products.  I produce many parts that work with other company’s parts.

It clearly states it on the brake hanger for the Sv650 it works with Zorans wheel conversion kit.   It clearly states in the risers which rear sets they are designed to work with.

When I’m done I’ll post the files on thingiverse for FREE noncommercial distribution.  Meaning it’s free for individuals to use, print but not sell commercially.

I don’t want anyone accusing me of making money of this “revolutionary” idea but do want people to have access to a better fitting , better functioning part.

If requested I could design a scoop.  It wouldn’t take me 100 hours.  Maybe 30 mins.  That I could also load on thingiverse or you could buy the really cool carbon fiber one.

I literally don’t have a dog in the fight other than I have a good reputation both personally and professionally that I’d like to keep it that way.

Guess the issue was making a better fitting, better functioning part hurt feelings.  If that’s the best they got I guess they have hurt feelings a lot. 😂

Quick 9 hour test print with low resolution just to see how it fits and it fits like you scanned an OE box and made a part for it.

When I make the final print I’ll probably scale it 101%

I think it’s a little tight and I’d rather not trim the box. I fits but a little more clearance would be nicer.

Wow, doesn't look like a copy at all. Quite a bit different, actually. One is a ram-air concept, one is a free-flowing concept.

Was his on the market - did you even have the opportunity to "copy" it? What does his patent say? 🤔

WTH happened to the engine?

Consider shortening the runners inside the box with your side-entrance air-flow, esp for racing.

Cheers

Amazing work! Do you tested it on a dyno? Also would it be possible to get also a right side panel? I mean inverting this parts so that we could use it on right side? Or even modifying the box to use on both sides?

Repeating amazing amazing work!

I didnt have any base lines for the motor but it has been on the dyno, motor was healthy and Darren will be riding with it on next round.  You could but there isnt a line on that side of of the air box to guide your cut.  You could mirror the STL file easy enough.

Also still in that model i mean during competition you are using filter material over it?

Correct.  Filters seem to cost about 2 hp vs open but its better than a $7.5k engine eatting a rock

Thanks!  We just keep rolling.  This is just a hobby.  If it goes some place awesome, if not as long as it pays for itself I'll keep doing it.
