High fuel consumption?

Hello everyone!

I ride a new MT 07 (2019 model) which i bought in July 2019. I currently have almost 7.500 km on it and from what i see compared to a friend's MT 07 (2019 model as well), i get about 3~ liters per 100 km more fuel consumption than he does.
Our use is the same. Mostly city riding with a lot of start & stop between traffic and no more than 70 kmh per ride.He also yanks the throttle like a hooligan, which i dont, in light of the test i am doing those days. We filled our tanks 2 days ago, resetted our AVG fuel consumption and now after 35 km my first bar of gas dropped meanwhile his is still there. My AVG fuel computer says 8.3l/100 km and his is sitting on 5.3l/100 and i cant understand why.We have the same motor, same use, same tire pressure, same gas & gas station, did the same break-in. The only difference is that he has a full system exhaust (black widow) and a DNA air filter, while i have the stock ones. He hasn't done any tuning to the ECU yet tho.
Could the air filter drop the fuel consumption that low? I tried driving a little faster and it doesn't do any difference. (optimal driving)

What else could be the case? It's bothering me because i think 8.5l/100 km (27.6 MPG)  for a MT 07 slow driving is too much.

I ran all last summer around the city and was always 7l/100km or better, while being a hooligan at times as well I must admit. With your bike being stock I dont see why it should be that high.

My guess would be its just in the fuel readings and calculations by the bike. I would ignore what the fuel consumption is reading and base your testing on how far you get out of a tank. Although bikes don't always read exactly correct mileage either, which could also be skewing the mileage reading.

Is it running rich?  Are you running the 2WheelDynoworks flash?  Mine was very rich after that flash.

I've never touched the ECU or anything. It's completely stock.

I am never a hooligan tho..For what it's worth, i'll refill again once i hit the 100 km mark so it will be precise. But then again, my reserve fuel lights up on 140-150 km. Maybe i should ask Yamaha to reset my ECU or something?

I hate to bring up the "pink elephant in the room", but what are the differences is the weights of the riders? That can make a difference-

In my case a big fat “pink elephant” 😂

No wonder my mileage sucks. Thanks for the reminder @cornerslider 😁

I only mention it because it's a "factor" in my world as well..... 😜

The avg fuel consumption is just useless information to be honest... go by miles per tank fill up... just use the "trip" meter, reset it after each fill up...

Your gonna drive your self nuts over this avg fuel consumption...

Yeah ill try that, but i dont think its that useless since i have 1-2 bars dropped on my gas meter and on the same KMs my friend has none or barely 1.

How do you know your buddies guage isn't the wonky one?

They're all untrustworthy. Actual distance traveled divided by actual quantity is only accurate determination.

Don't worry about it, enjoy your bike.

I know the feeling, at 5'9" and a little over 200lbs, I'm not exactly a lightweight myself.  I guess I like potato chips and beer a little too much.  I do however get great fuel economy: as low as 3.2 L per 100 km.  I may be heavy on the seat, but I'm light on the throttle. 😆

I am gonna check it this way.

The thing is, i use this machine as a daily commute and i got it because i heard it has a very good fuel consumption, even for everyday city use and being like this prevents me from enjoying it 😋

I never understood why it's so important to know what kind of mileage you're getting 'all the time'. 'Knowing' your mileage isn't going to make any difference to it but on the other hand it does seem to be a good source of annoyance for many people that are concerned with it. My bike ('15 FZ-07) has over 39k miles on it now and I'm just glad that it still runs good.

Personally, i'd like to know if there is any problem with my bike (hence the consumption difference) or is it because of the exhaust & air filter combo.

That good Canadian beer will get ya everytime! I myself witness the effects

But 3.2 is very impressive even if the bike is being a tad optimistic with its readings!

Sorry about that. My first thought was maybe it's because it gets more air/breathes better, better pipe, more efficient, more mpg.

The 3.2 was calculated, not taken from the bike's readings.  However, I was driving as easy as possible to see how good the fuel economy could get.  That being said, I seldom go above 4L per 100km with my normal "grandpa" riding style.

So, i did 98 km and i filled up the tank, it took 7 liters until it was full almost to the lid. The trip computer at that time was on 7.5l/100 km. Which is still pretty high for my right wrist use.

Well, that would be another reason pushing me to buy exhaust & air filter 😆

? I am always around 3.8 - 4.2 l /100 km and calculate with a save distance of 300 km to the next fuel stop.  Stock everything, maybe try to use the 5th and 6th gear :)

We have a fuel consumption comparison (omg does this word even exist? :D ) page over here in Germany, this also shows thats the usual area. You can switch it to english translation:

The roads  and traffic i drive in rarely allow even the 4th gear, it's always start & stop 😔

Wow that makes it even more impressive! My best calculated was 3.9L/100km over 2 back to back tanks cruising in 6th but I get bored easily and tend to apply some throttle once in a while!

So, today i noticed something odd. I resetted my AVG fuel consumption and after a 1 km ride (downhill mostly) it was on 5.5 which is fine. After i turn the bike off and then on after 2 hours, the AVG jumped on 8.5l/100 before i even start it.

Could this be a fault of my ECU? Seems very strange, i wonder if anyone has seen the same.
