Whats a slipper clutch? 😀

Many years ago i put one on my race SV650. It was fun dropping 2 gears and releasing the clutch into Turn 7 at Sears Point. Backin it in. It got rid of the rear wheel buckin and hoppin on downshift since i was never a blip kind of rider. It did not make me faster.

Years later i race an 16 FZ07 thats still on the original OEM clutch and still dont blip the throttle. My rear end doesnt buck and hop either. I tend to finesse releasing the clutch/applying front brake alot more on downshifting.

I havnt felt the need for a slipper. I dont think it would make me faster today either. Ooops! didnt answer your questions?

I'm an absolute mess when I try to brake and blip at the same time...

In all my years of riding /racing, just never did it. Hell, i still use standard shift. Started with it 30 years ago and just dont want to attempt GP shift.

I ordered a Suter.

That’s what I have as well. Installed over the winter so no ride time on it yet.

I just switched last season, lol. I was the guy that would never, ever, NEVER, change to gp cuz it was stupid and unnecessary. I only messed up one shift while learning and am now a much happier old mutt. (I'm starting to realize it may just be me that is stupid and unnecessary) I now like gp shift and am liking my Yoyo slipper on track more and more all the time too, shh, don't say anything.  I still luv hooning with direct drive tho. 😁

I do see some benefits to GP shift on the racetrack. At this point though, unless im able to do a trackday or two testing it, sending myself to the moon by incorrectly shifting is a risk ill hold off on for now. Has your slipper made you a faster rider? What are your likes and dislikes about it compared to oem clutch on the FZ07?

You won't launch yourself. I had an old guy tell me "head up - toe up, head down - toe down" before sending me out. I switched in morning practice one day and never looked back. I messed up once in traffic but that's all it took to convert me to gp shift.  As far as faster with/without a slipper. I don't know if my lap times would support that I'm faster but I have more available bandwidth with it. Maybe due to my age I also seem to have more fun with a slipper. I've had guys comment that I'm now coming back under them on the throttle after they have block passed me into a corner on the brakes where I never would have been able to before, presumably due to higher corner speed. I'm not upsetting the chassis farting around with clutch/brake/throttle/lean/crash as much either. One other thing, with a slipper you have to be careful doing cool down wheelies and cover the rear brake as there isn't much there when you chop the throttle to save it, lol.

i cant talk for the track as i dont have much experience there, but from a street standpoint gp shift has made it easier for just shifting in general. the shifter seems to line up with where your foot wants to be in an emergency situation.
just my $.02

ATGATT... ATTATT, two acronyms I live by.

Interesting discussion on a topic I've been curious about for a while now. Following this. Anyone else out there with a slipper that can add their experience/thoughts. I think that I'll try GP shift for the laugh and see how it works out for me.

+1 for race shift.  Seems more natural for me.

I don't have the money for a slipper right now, but will get one sooner than later.

I actually havent switched to GP shift yet either but might with this FZ since its already set up that way. Started racing in 06 but never got around to switching. Ive ridden a couple other bikes that are but it was just trackday messing around so not under the pressure of racing.

Slipper clutch wise I have had STM slippers in my racebikes previously and always liked the way it lowers the amount of crap to think about when coming into the corner. I still try to be smooth with the clutch release but dont worry about blipping any more and If I get it all wrong it saves my bacon and makes me look better than I really am.

It will be while before I get to try it out as it is winter time here in Colorado and I dont technically have the bike yet as I bought it out of Michigan and it hasnt been picked up yet. Just in process of ordering parts so when the bike comes I can jump right in it.

Looks like Joe Kraft's bike found a good home 😊 The Spears slipper is actually made by Yoyodyne. I'm prolly gonna go back to naked racing next year. The body position is much more agreeable with my old bone sack.

Ah ha, good eye!! yes this was his bike and yes he raced it in naked form with just a tail, upper cowl and lower belly pan. I will not be racing it that way and have ordered bodywork for it already. Im not doing the normal fz bodywork like most of them are done Ill be doing something a bit different but has been seen before. If you are interested Ill be getting rid of the bodywork that is currently on it.

In your own words: "Hit me up when you get around to it." I might be able to relieve you of the bodywork, if it's the full fairing aero package your talking about. I can't remember if you have shark-skins or AP MotoArts.

I like the "head down-toe down" reference... I'll have to remember that!  A buddy wanted to try my FZ-07 on track as he was considering buying one. He had a totally track-prepped R3 that I was gonna ride in the same session. We met in the staging area, and I asked him during the trade-off "Is there anything I need to to know about your bike?".... He said, "yeah, it's got a quick shifter, and GP shift".... As I watched him ride off on my FZ-07, I knew I made a mistake.... I've been riding for 40+ years, and I REALLY struggled to re-learn 40 years of muscle memory (quickly). In my mind, it was an epic failure on my end. I went to Blackhawk Farms later that year. There's a certain corner there, where I had the "a-ha" moment, I clearly understood the whole GP shift idea.... I still haven't committed to it, but I can clearly the benefits 😎👍-

The main benefit of gp shift is that you can change up a gear at extreme lean angles - normal shift pattern won’t allow you to get your toes under the shift lever at lean.

I don’t push the limits on the track enough to make use of gp shift. That, and I blew up an engine accidentally once when I tried it out on a new to me race bike (Honda NC30). Muscle memory sucks!

That looked like a well sorted bike. Especially for the price. Have fun!

I thought so too. I have been interested in them since the very first one debuted several years ago but wasnt in a position to make it happen until now. Really what it came down to was me being willing to let go of my 2 CBR 600's and being willing to try a different brand. Lol. Its going to be way different and my wife thinks hell just froze over! I hope it goes well!
