Who Is Running A Slipper Clutch

Looking for some reviews for those of you that have installed a slipper.
Street, Track or both?

Brand?

Ease of install?

Would you do it again?

General overall thoughts?

 Thanks!

Boy, you've realy fallen off your nut, lol.

Here's my $.02,

I enjoy riding a bike without a slipper. I like the engine braking, especially on the street, where I can use it in conjunction with the brakes to control my speed in a casual manner. I never clown around on public roadways tho. On the track a regular clutch is nice to a point. It's fun at track days to back it into a corner and hoon around like a clown pretending I know what I'm doing. Keep in mind tho at a track day I'm out having fun at a comfortably fast pace, not blood red race pace. Others will undoubtedly have varying opinions.

Racing is a different animal all together for me. I like the slipper. It helps me keep my corner speed up and frees up some much needed bandwidth in my small processor.  I can set my corner-out gear by banging 3 downshifts before apex w/o fear of the tranny exploding or upsetting the chassis. The bike just slips into the corner as i focus on hitting my marks and brakes while i can ignore the engine/tranny/clutch/rpm temporarily. I can pick up the throttle as I'm coming off the brakes with no drama. Believe me theres a lot of drama in my helmet during a race.

I installed a Yoyodyne slipper. Stupid easy, replaces the inner clutch parts with the ramp, balls etc and reuses the stock clutch plates. Takes an hour to swap in and much of that is gasket cleaning and finger pinching while putting the cover back on and trying to engage the clutch pawl, lol.

Costs around 8fiddy for the yoyo, I'm not sure about cost of the Suter but I imagine it performs similarly.

I like the slipper overall and would do it again. Do you 'need one'? No, but they sure are nice.

Yea I agree I have lost it completely.
Last bike had one and I got used to it. As you said I like to be able downshift at will without sliding all over the place and stay somewhat in control. I was expecting more of the engine braking to be tuned out but you can only do so much.
I really don’t “need” any if the mods of done but I have a problem, a big problem.
The one I really didn’t need the most seems to put the biggest smile on my face, quick shifter 😁. Weighing how badly I am going to piss off the wife.
There is a guy selling a Suter locally for a decent price so might just grab it.

I would go for it!!! I had one on my CRF450R (supermoto). It just put a silly grin on my face backing' it into a corner 😝... It took one less thing off my mind when setting up for a corner, AND it does exactly the same thing EVERY time. If you can buy used, do it! I had an STM slipper, that was $975 new. I picked one up used for $500. I rode two seasons on it, and took it out (before I sold the bike), and sold it for $500!!! Basically, I got to enjoy the slipper for free.... "pull-the-trigger", and don't look back- 😎

This guy sold his 07 before he installed it and I am pretty confident I can get it for $600 (Suter) new in box. I am just waiting to hear back as I type here. Sounds like a similar situation to yours and I don’t think I can go wrong. For the first time in all my bike owning years I am very confident I will never sell my 07. I really won’t have any complaints after a slipper. Best bike purchase for me with out a doubt!

I'm in the same boat.... I totally LOVE my FZ-07!!!! I'm starting to consider a slipper for it as well. My issue is when I had some time off work, I added up my total investment in the bike (bike + go-fast parts), it came up to over $12K!!!! It really got away from me.... Especially considering I'm too old/broken to race (I do track days). My wife started track riding with me in 2015. With both of us doing it, the money goes pretty quickly!!! We just bought her a 2016 R3, that I'm setting up for her to be a dedicated track bike this winter. Maybe in 2021 I can get my slipper 😝-

Let’s hope 2021 is the year of @cornerslider’s slipper clutch!

Just the word (Suter) gets me excited, then add new in the box... Its over. But why? or is the question.. Why Not!! I'd say why not. I've never experienced a slipper clutch, but I'd like to try it out.

A slipper clutch is top on my list to get when the budget allows.  I have only heard positives from street and track riders.  But I do think the hard core drag racers don't like them.  I forget exactly why.

Came to a deal this morning at $675. Not as good as I hoped but not too bad.
does anyone know what gaskets I will need for the install? Does the water pump housing have to come off?
I am stuck in the house but would like to order gaskets as well today. Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to the big change in rideability.

A little late to this thread, but yes, slipper is the way to go IMHO, because it's safer on the street, especially in wet weather, and allows you to keep your corner speed on the track and also helps prevent premature wear on the motor and tranny.

I had the Yoyodyne for years (liked it, but felt it in the lever), and just switched to Suter.  Suter was butter smooth in my short street test, but haven't used it on track yet.

:)

Thanks Paul! I am hoping it everything it is supposed to be.
Do you know what gaskets I need to replace?

If I'm not mistaken, just the main case gasket the side the clutch is on...

Okay cool. I didn’t know if the water pump cover needs to come off or not. Going to be shooting from the hip for sure and ordered the case gasket. Can’t find much tutorial online either so more learning on the fly. Thanks Paul

I'm sure someone will chime in on here.  it's been a while since I've looked at it.  I did my R3 myself, and it was just the case gasket, but my FZ-07 was done when the motor was built so I can't recall 100% since I didn't build the motor :)

Just the clutch cover gasket. And Bandaids, you gotta have bandaids. You're supposed to pinch your finger tips putting the cover back on.

Don't laugh, you will.

And post a pic of your blood blisters, lol.

The fz for any track work needs a slipper.  The rotating assembly in the bike is crazy heavy.

I have installed both the Suter and Yoyo.  The Suter is much nicer for about $20 more retail.

My personal bikes are Yoyo because there wasn’t a Suter option at the time.  I just installed one in a motor build and it’s really nice.

Lot’s of good reviews of the slipper for the 07! I guess it was fate to find the Suter at a good price. I will have it here next week and will wait until I can use both arms and have a friend help with the install. I also found a service manual for the FZ and I am sure it will be be useful.
Any other tips (besides lots of bandaids 😂) are appreciated. It says I don’t need any “special” tools anymore to do it.
Another learning experience for me and this forum is sure a good resource!

One other question here to all the experts, is there a brand of clutch plates I should get for this application or anything special for that matter. I could probably reuse what I have in there with only about 5k but am thinking I may as well replace since it’s apart. Is my reasoning correct? Thanks in advance!

Previous threads of that question... one of which was mine.... stated that factory plates are more than adequate even for racing was the consensus at the time early this year. Since you're going to have it all apart, you might as well drop in some new plates. They're not expensive

@DewMan we are on the same page. I reached out to Rick at Graves who is the exclusive US importer to Suter and he echoed your exact thought almost verbatim so thanks for confirming for me. I will hang onto the ones in there in case I can help another member in need at some point. Probably will start pulling it apart in a couple of weeks and take my time. I have started saying my prayers for an early spring already, too soon? Lol

Well the most important component came today! Looks like a quality product. Can’t wait to get it in and snow to go away

Might get a big chain and wear it around my neck flavor flav style for a few months 😁

Was always told oem plates are just fine unless you start having slip/binding issues but that shouldn't come til you upgrade the motor to a superbike type build. And even those I believe use oem plates on most of em
