I have always just used the little flat adhesive backed wheel weights cut in half and stuck to the face of the fork yoke stops.  1 or 2 stacked on the face seemed to do the trick for most club racers but looked like ass. When I showed up in the MotoAmerica paddock I found out that 'ass' waddn't gonna cut it so I upgraded 😆 You can just make out one in the pic bellow.

Honestly they work fine this way and no one would ever see them unless they crawled inside your fairings.

So I decided to get a little creative with the steering stop.

Thanks to Mossrider for the idea of using the wheel weights. I looked real hard at doing it that way, but I was going to need so many stacked up that I was worried they would rattle around and fall off. Then my first crash would destroy my dash.

So I started taking measurements, and here is what I came up with in CAD:

Now I'm not bad at running CAD software, but I'm sure as shet no machinist. I asked a friend who is, and he said the part was a little too complicated for the tools he has available. I checked with a local machine shop, and the cost was too high for a little steering stop.

I got to thinking about the design and how I could build it with the rudimentary tools in my garage, and my extremely limited skill set. A quick trip to Metal Supermarkets for some 1/4 x 3/4 aluminum bar, and then all day Saturday pretending like I know what I'm doing, and here's what I came up with:

I had to remove material to allow the stop to fit around the fillet welds on the existing OEM steering stop.

Here is the final product installed on the bike:

I think I goofed a little and removed just a bit too much material on the right hand side. I have setup the bars and controls so they don't touch anything based on the current position with the steering stop. We'll see how I like the angle of everything once I actually get the bike out on track. I may end up adding a wheel weight to that side after all. Maybe I'll paint in blue in honor of @mossrider

My spiffy new tripples came with a super cool steering stop but I couldn't use it on philosophical grounds since someone else had come up with it. So I did this on Shawn's bike,

Well she's finally finished. Here is the final product.

My wife did the vinyl wrap, and I think she knocked it out of the part. I picked the colors, but she did the design.

 

If everything goes right, I should get a chance to test it out this weekend. I am so excited to ride this thing!

Had a great weekend of track riding up in the great white north this past weekend. Managed to get the bike out for 2 full track days. This was supposed to be the clubs first weekend of races, but with COVID19 and government restrictions, the call was made to cancel the event, because "competitive events" were still not allowed, but "instructional events" were okay. Government makes the rules, we just have to jump through the hoops. Oh well.

Despite a really dodgy forecast, the weather was absolutely perfect. Saturday I was really getting a feel for the bike, and towards the end of the day as I started to find my groove, I was noticing some scary headshake coming out of the chicane before the front straight.
I spoke to the local suspension guru, and he had a look at my sag numbers. He removed some preload from the rear, and the next day the problem was completely gone. He figures that the Ohlins shock I bought setup for my weight and bike was setup assuming I still had the stock linkage components. With the dog bone link I bought from Andy Palmer, it raised the rear, and reduced squat, but that meant my preload was too stiff, and causing the front to lift under hard acceleration.

It makes perfect sense when he explains it, but I swear suspension tuning is black magic.

I'm just waiting for the photographers to post their pictures from the weekend, and then I'm going to buy a bunch and I'll share them with you guys.

So glad to hear you got out and had a chance to abuse it on track and have a good time.  Whatever you call it I call it fun! All hail the instructional event!

The track photographer finally published her photos from June 14.

This was a local track day, so I'm still going pretty slow getting everything dialed in. By the end of the day I was feeling really good, and back to my usual (still slow) pace from last year on my Ninja 650.

This will be the end of the thread. Thanks everyone for all the feedback, and the advice along the way. It was a fun build, and I definitely could not have done it without all the help from everyone on this forum. I've been creeping and reading for years before I made the decision and bought my FZ-07 with the intent to build it into a race bike.

Now I actually get to race this thing. First race is on July 5, on a track I've never ridden before. I can't wait!

I went to home depot and bought PVC pipe. What a pain in the ass that was, I'll go rumaging for the seal driver soon as I'll be waiting on my NIX-22 cartridges to come in for a couple of weeks.

The electrical tape trick works really well. There are several good YouTube videos with step by step instructions.

That airbox. Yeah, that airbox. Fricken thing.  Seriously, if you trim the wings off the front you can disconnect the throttle bodies from the box, shove the air boots back into the airbox, wiggle the throttle bodies out of the engine side boots, pull the tb's out the left side with cables attached and then the box can move far enough forward to get it out the left side. You'll need a box of Bandaids ready. I can remove the airbox in about 4 minutes now, fricken thing. Gahhh!
