Speed sensor in Bike with ABS

Im assuming it is a basic 3 wire hall effect sensor.  Within the sensor plug there should be a 5v reference voltage from the ecu, as well as a ground, then the signal wire switches from 0-5v as the "reluctor ring" spins, based on the notches, (most likely just one of the gears or maybe shaft spine in the transmission).

With bike running and wheel spinning really slow (so multi meter has time to react), one of the wires should switch between 0-5v. If not, make sure you have the 5v reference signal and ground in the plug, if you have those and it still doesnt switch from 0-5 then the sensor is bad.  If you can see in the hole, make sure there is even a reluctor ring looking thing in there that it can read, I doubt they would change the transmission.  Google reluctor ring for reference.

With that said, the fact that the speed still increases while cranking leads me to believe that something is not wired correctly. My guess is missing a ground somewhere because I assume you swapped it all over and left everything plugnplay.  And if anything was modified wiring wise anywhere double check that too.

Thanks Geophb for your patience and wisdom ;) ,
I will look into it because I can`t imagine the sensor is busted since it`s brand new.
It is a 3 wire "hall effect sensor" and when it`s not installed you can see a gear in the speed sensor hole.
When the teeth of that gear pass by the sensor the ecu will calculate the speed ( at least that`s what I think it does)
Now that you mention it, the abs sub wire harness uses another connector ( 7 wires ) than the non abs harness ( 10 wires, 3 extra for the speed sensor ) and I have cut it off to solder it to the other wire loom.
But I`ve recently bought a NON ABS sub wire harness ( which goes to the injectors, speed sensor etc. ) and I had to resolder the connector to the Non Abs.
It is possible that I screwed something up because in that connector there are 2 black/blue wires and 2 blue wires I believe so that might be the problem.
Come to think of it, I think it did the same thing before switching the connectors but I`m not sure.
But I`m kinda busy at the moment so when I`ve got time I will look into it and I will let you know what I find.
Thanks again!

Hey All!

I feel like such a noob😖😫
Tested the "new" OEM speed sensor and it turns out that it had died, so contacted my parts dealer and thankfully it was replaced  under warranty.
Now the speedometer completely  works!!!!
Probably have to buy a Speedohealer because I was -according to the speedo- driving a 136mph/220kmph when I was only doing about 49ish mph/80kmph.😁😁
A big thank you to everyone for the advise and help!

Kind regards,
Kars

Man that thing is wicked sick! 😍 👍

Glad it was just the sensor.

Whats your gearing and tire size?  I thought i ran the numbers and it looked like it was gonna be closer than that.

Thanks Geophb,

The front is a 16 tooth and the rear is a 36 tooth sprocket and the rear tire size is 20x11-9 ( 275/50-9)
Small side note the MT/FZ uses a 525 chain and the raptor a 520 chain.
So the front sprocket is a Afam 520 16t (probably for the 30kw bike) and there are no other choices tooth wise.
Thanks again man!!

Yep just triple checked, with that tire size and gearing your speed should be within 1-2% of the fz07 readings,  pretty much perfect.  Did you check accuracy in both kmh and mph?

So, first I was thinking this.

But you would have an abs light on I would assume???? Your sure you bought an non-abs dash?

A speed healer would fix it though.

Hey!

I have only checked in kmph. Currently i’m using te ABS ecu and dash (abs light removed) because of the immobiliser. When i use the non abs ecu with the non abs ecu and an immobiliser emulator the bike won’t start properly. And to be honest i hate the fact that i can’t change the temp from F to C on the non abs dash. Have i not removed the abs light then it would be on. Healtech should fix the issue tho so currenly looking to purchase one.

Small update;

I`ve just got the Healtech Speedohealer V4 ( SH-V4 + SH-Y04 ) and installed it and now the machine shows the correct speed!!!😀😀😀
Could`nt be happier with that product!
Healtech Electronics replied to my emails very fast and the product itself is super easy to install and program.
So if anybody needs a speedohealer i would definitely recomand their V4.
That wraps up my project!
Once again: thanks to everyone who has helped me, this is a great forum!

Kind regards from Holland and keep it safe!

Thank you for your reply,
I can't verify that but I will look into it
The MT-07 cockpit doesn't display any fault codes however the ABS light is on ( obviously because there is no ABS)
Engine also runs great without problems.

My MT07 2017 model I removed abs fuse from the fuse box because while I am stunting doing wheelies the abs doesn’t activate and make me crash…. I removed it and went for a ride a day after I took it out which is today and I was riding it was okay I stopped and went for another ride with friends and then realised speedo is reading ZERO! What can I do?!

Hey everyone!

Help needed with this problem.
I have a Yamaha Raptor (quad) with an MT-07 engine in it
This engine came off a 2016 Bike which had ABS.
Since I use it on a quad and can't use the ABS system I've cut it out of the wiring loom.
I've bought a new OEM Speedsensor but i can't seem to get it working properly, speed goes up and down while in first gear. (with the back wheels in the air on a stand)
The sensor is wired directly to the ECU ( not in the wiring loom) to the corresponding colour coded wires.
Can anybody help me out with some tips?
Thank you in advance!

Hi there iv just put the mt07 In a dinli 450 frame and am just in the process of wiring up the speedo I was wondering if you could shed any light on how you wired the speedo sensor into the ecu many thanks

The FZ-07 did not have ABS in North America until 2017, then only on the red ones.  MT-07’s have always had ABS.

Hey Johnmt,

I`ve bought a non abs wiring loom for the MT-07, this loom has the stock speedsensor connector.
Then it`s just a matter of plugging the speedsensor into the connector.
My Raptor runs on the ABS ECU ( I removed the ABS Light in the dash) but everything works as it should .
I would recommend buying a Healtech Speedohealer SH-V4 + SH-YO4 otherwise your dash is going to display the wrong speed.
If you are using an engine and wiring loom from an ABS Equiped bike then you also need to buy a Speedsensor, you can find the Yamaha part number on the first page of this thread.
Hope this helps.
If there is anything I can help you with then let me know.

Hi there raptor-mt  thank you so much for the quick response I really appreciate the help. I have a abs engine and abs clocks and loom and ecu but would I be possible to buy the speed sensor which goes into the engine and hard wire it to the ecu iv see a post on another group which someone said how he hard wired it to the ecu many thanks for any advice it’s just the last piece of the puzzle

It should be possible I guess, but the abs wire harness does`nt have the 3 wires needed for the speedsensor.
And I can`t tell you on which one of the ecu pins these wires go.
I like my builds clean with as little extra wires as possible, this is why I`ve gone the non abs loom route.
BTW there is one for sale in Italy on ebay, it`s called "Impianto elettrico NO ABS Wiring harness Yamaha MT 07 2014
Makes your life a lot easier.
If you`re not going that route than I can check on my quad to which pins these wires go, but I`ll have to do that late this afternoon.

Thanks again raptor mt

I will go down the  new loom route if I have to its just all the loom had been extended to suit the quad and all the abs wires have been removed and a bit of a pain to have to extend and shorten other parts of the loom if I change it for a new one that’s why I was looking at just wireing it into the designated wires on the ecu

I know what you mean, I`ve also done it twice after finding out that it`s easier to buy another wiring loom ;)
Keep in mind to buy a complete loom so a main loom & the injector loom.
Think about the end result, then it will all be worth it believe me.

FYI:

North American FZ-07s did not have ABS until the 2017 model year and then only as an option with the Rapid Red color. When the FZ-07 was rebadged as the MT-07 in 2018 it also made ABS standard equipment.

The rest of the world has had ABS since the first model year as I understand it.
