People wonder why I take meds,

Look closely at that pic...

They go in the back of my spare sprocket carrier and are sold separately.

How much was the carrier you ask? Twice+ the cost of the cush buttons.

Oh, and by the way you need sprockets too.

Normally I don't whine about what everyone knows is an expensive sport but dayum.

DAMN! 😱 And here I am thinking the horde intake was excessive.

I get to spend 13 of the next 19 days at various race tracks either racing, wrenching or like today corner working. Along with the ubiquitous Scions, Civics, BRZs and Miata's are 2 beautiful McLarens and a Lotus. Mama mia. Here's my view from T3 at Brainerd International Raceway.

What sounds better, a 5.0 Ford GT with Borla exhaust or a twin turbo Porsche?

In other news we blew a motor at Blackhawk Farms where Shawn was putting the spurs to his new bike with one of my old motors in it. He was having a good weekend too, crashed outta 1st when a lapper went down in front of him on the last lap spreading parts under him, finished 2 hard fought battles in 2nd, then pulled off outta 1st when the motor let go. Oh well. Good thing I have his motor ready to go in this coming weekend, and now I know what I can expect for longevity, lol.

In other, really good news; wife says we're in the market for a track day car. Woot!

I loved my Exige S it was painful to drive on the street but hysterical handling and the supercharger whine with it directly behind you made ear plugs a must.

Funny we were just talking about engines the other day.  Sorry the bad luck followed you.  I’m sure it’s a simple fix.

Haha, I was thinking more like a nice little affordable Miata. Something I could tinker and have fun with and the wife could toodle around in on or off track. But that rig is sure nice! And don't come around here with no damn custom billet performance nothin, you....

No biggie on that motor either. That one had a season at 80 sumthin hp with just cams in it and another season + with a full build at 90hp on it, probably 100 sprint races and 2 five hour endurance races, 5 MotoAmerica races over the past 2 seasons too.

More junk from the trunk, almost 30 years ago today...

I think I paid $175 for MotoGP @ COTA  a couple years ago. Good times.

AMA Superbike ran here beginning in 1982. Wayne Rainey won the inaugural event and in 1986 & 87.  Kinda gone full circle. My father (M.A. Mortenson Const) actually disassembled and hauled the bleachers, now on the front straight of BIR, up from Metropolitan Stadium when it was torn down to be replaced by the Metrodome in 1982. Now that's gone too, to make room for the new Vikings Stadium, haha.

This is the Central Roadracing Association's 50 year anniversary all at this track. We are one of the oldest non profit race clubs still in operation.

Sorry for the trip down memory lane.

That ticket stub is older than i am.....

also, for trackdays
if you go miata, i recommend either the new gen (2017+)
or the 90-98
the middle years felt a bit flexy on the track.
I would also recommend a first gen Eclipse/Talon parts are fairly inexpensive, and the 4g63 is nearly bulletproof
first one i built was pushing about 580tq on 20lbs boost on stock bottom end.

ATGATT... ATTATT, two acronyms I live by.

Having raced and owned few track cars if I was going cheap route I would get E30 beemer.

Otherwise hard to beat Porsche for track duty. :)

So this is my latest disaster. Happened on the way to the track, 65 into a 35mph headwind + old trailer = good times.

Wind got under the half cap I guess and modified it for me. Best part was after patching it with, you guessed it, Flex Tape, as seen on TV; I crashed pulling a trash bin to my pit space with the Rukus and ran myself over with Waste Managements high speed dumpster, ruined my brand new Dickies workshirt, another $40!

What could possibly go wrong next week on the way to Road America?

Think it needs gearing change :)

Trailer deal sucks, maybe put spoiler on the truck roof.

Haha, flex tape is so sticky if it ever flops back on itself you can never get it apart, holy fk does it stick. We got the 12" white fix anything the homeowner can screw up size.  Only thing the wind can peel off now is at the chassis level. Stay tuned for next week's catastrophe post, lol.

Not bad looking on the outside but the inside is all torn open as well.

Problem is when the weight is on the hitch the goose neck flexes. Tears everything loose. It's fine when on the jacks. That's why this company went out of business, they built junk. This one was allegedly fixed after product liability suit but is still junk. Oh well shower and air works. ☺

porsche on the track are good, but payin for a name in spare parts... could always find a c4/z06 corvette too... they're pretty fun on the track.

i never had good luck with my beemer, it was always breaking down
traded it for my talon,  best trade i made to date

I had Cayman. Was most reliable car I ever had. Beat the crap out of it and 0 problems.

We used beemers for Lemons racing. We did about 10 races on e28 without blowing it before K-wall popped in front of it :)

Update,

We got a new motor swapped into V2. Motor makes better power when the cams are installed properly, we tested it both ways to be sure 🙄. Shawn was quickly up to speed and laying waste to the lightweight grid. We also got some valuable wet track time on Saturday. A couple showers helped get our rain setup dialed in and let Shawn get some much needed seat time on rain tires.

I got new forks put on my bike which resident scrawny quick kid Daniel helped get dialed in in Tony's absence. Very pleased with where we're at for next weekend at Road America.

We also put new tripples and linkage in Shawn's original AP bike to bring it inline with the other 2 as far as handling.

IMG_20200620_062031.thumb.jpg.3be9736e010b527e57b2595931844e16.jpg

I've just completed the turn around on the bikes and am loading up for another bite at Road America as I type this.

Giddyup

I started pulling down the wounded motor. It had ok static compression but I was unable to get a leak down test on it before disassemblly. The head, cams and bearing surfaces look good. The cylinder bores and pistons appear normal, albeit worn. It undoubtedly needs pistons and rings. The clutch, on the other hand, is roached. The steels are discolored badly and warped from heat and the fibers are ground away to nothing. Neither meet factory spec and all will be replaced.

Lesson learned. Inspect and replace plates in slipper clutch much more frequently than a standard clutch. Duh.

I'll attach pics later.

So we're in the game with both bikes at Road America. After P1 and Q1 today Shawn sits in 9th, Tony in 12th, not bad. Tomorrow is Q2 and we'll have to dig deep to defend or move up on the grid.

IMG_20200626_173837.thumb.jpg.a107e3506501801c4b6d0c51ac6ddd25.jpg

We're right in the middle of @Spatt 's crew of 3 filthy fast Suzuki's.

Best racing story ever happens near the end of Q1. Shawn is working hard to gain a spot or two on an iffy track and low sides outta T3 in front of a big cheering crowd. He pops up but the controls are damaged so can't continue and takes a bow for the appreciative fans. While Shawn is waiting for the crash truck to pick him up a guy and his wife ask for a photo to which he dutifully obliges. Helmet off, best pro pose, big smile, arm around the gentleman's wife and while her husband snaps the pic she says to him, "Why not grab the titties, you earned it".

The whole crowd roars as the husband throws Shawn an ice cold PBR for his effort. Gotta luv racing.

Well today sucked. We had temperature issues with both bikes. To be fair so did several of the other bikes. We dropped spots like stones. I think Shawn is P11 for the race and Tony is P16. Robems guys are P3/7/13 and Hayden Shultz from this forum is P5. Congrats to those folks and we'll see you on track tomorrow 👍

We think we have the heat under control for now, but we're simply gonna have to upgrade the stock radiators at this level.

Tony got a $150 speeding ticket on pit lane now he thinks he's fast.  Dipstick.

Watched the latest Twins Cup race today--some great competition there.  It was a treat to see that some of our beloved forum members were there and riding hard.  Good luck to you all. 👍
