What kind and Where do I get a new battery?

Recommended Posts

Jessg562

New to motorcycles, my battery is completely drained.

Dumb question, but where do I get a new battery for my 2016 fz07? I can only find some online and none of which specify it’s for a 2016. I’m not near to many cycle shops. Do they have them at Walmart or auto zone? Is there a specific type to look for or what will fit? Thanks for helping a newb out.

Well here's a parellel thread for starters.

Walmart  and auto parts stores may well have something that will work if not the exact replacement. You can also get a suitable replacement from places like Fleet Farm, Tractor Supply, Country General or whatever similar retailer you have around that handles batteries for atvs, power sports, farm & whatnot. Also in more urban areas try a specialty battery store. They will have power supply, electronics back-ups, emergency power supply batteries and such and should be able to match your battery by load and capacity close enough.

If you're an Internet junkie try Revzilla, a vendor in the sidebar of this page. Or Dennis Kirk or Sportbike Track Gear (STG).

Just take your battery in with you if you go an alternative route and have them match it for size and capacity. It's not hard.

Good luck.

The "where to get one" has been covered so I'll focus on the "what kind" to buy. I hope this helps.

BTW, If you put your make/model bike in amazons "garage" it will tell you if a battery/part is for your bike or not. If you need any further assistance give a holler!

Got mine at Batteries Plus.  The bike sits all summer so I occasionally put on a trickle charger.

This battery normally ships via USPS Priority mail, with expected* delivery time of 2-4 days. MAKE SURE YOU USE A POST OFFICE DELIVERABLE ADDRESS! Customer will be responsible for shipping...

Scorpion Batteries. I also own a Honda ST1300 and I've had 2 of these and this is a much larger, hard to crank engine.

They each have lasted about 6 years with a Battery Tender charge now and then, especially over winter.

Awesome battery for the price.

Be sure to read their tutorial section on charging a battery to make it last 6+ years.

Yall gonna hate on me for this, but here in Canada we get totally ripped off when it comes to basic things like batteries.

I was super excited to try one I found on amazon for 25 bucks... even if it lasts only a year or something, screw it, it's 25 bucks. I'm not shelling out 250+ CAD for an OEM or equivalent aftermarket battery from the dealer.

So far so good, been running it since spring and it's holding steady at 13.1v still.

The Shorai advice mentioned in the Video ( by my fav motorcycle youtuber) needs to be modified a little.

Do not get the battery capacity recommended by Shorai. It is mentioned in the video why, but he doesn't stress it enough. Shorai recommends a battery that is too small ( probably to make it seem "cheaper"). Get at least 30-50% bigger capacity. I used quite a few in my race and street bikes. Personally I have moved from Shorai for exactly this reason and buy other quality brands of LiFePO4 batteries ( eg SB, Antigravity etc).

The LFX19A4-BS12 battery recommended for my FZ-07 by Shoraipower.com website is spec'ed higher than the factory battery it replaced.  I've had zero issues with having enough power for starting and running my accessories using the recommended Shorai model.

I'm not understanding your reluctance to use Shorai batteries? Could you expand on your reasons for moving to another brand please? ✌️

Fair point Dewman.

I used the recommended Shorais in a few bikes ( my race then street bikes). The problem was they would become reluctant to start after a while. The charging voltages were all fine but the batteries after a while would simple fail to turn the bike over.  This was particularly true of my TR650. When it went to buy a LiFePO4 Shorai for the GS500 project bike , I thought as an afterthought to see what they were speccing for the MT07 ( I had bought one as soon as I had bought the bike). The new spec was 50% higher than the old one.

I have a shed of dead Shorais that simply died ( suspect one cell in them goes). I ressurected one when I bought an Optimate charger but the others are sick.

After changing to SB's I haven't had any troubles. I got that because the recommended Shorai wasn't available for my GF's KTM 690 so I got a SB locally. It didn't miss a beat even starting that giant cyl.

This could have been a teething trouble with the original introduction and may no longer be the case,  but it has put me off Shorai, not LiFePO4. I spent many hundreds of dollars on unreliable batteries. That with the very poor and expensive off bike Shorai charger that never seemed to work properly.

A Note or two :

1. LiFePO4 charge perfectly well in motorcycles. They require > 12.8V , NOT 13.8 as you see some people claim occasionally . That is for Li-ion batteries, not Li-iron. That why I have moived to calling them Lithium ferro phosphate to avoid confusion.

2. The best off bike charger I have found is recent Optimate LiFePO4 specific charger. It even resurrected one of the batteries that I couldn't charge with the Shorai charger. The rest were cactus though.

  • Thanks 2
