With them being very similar kind of bikes--competitors so to speak--won't the 07 be jealous? <img src=">

Same thing I'm wondering. I bet one of them won't still be in that garage eventually :).

They are quite similar actually.  The 790 is just...more.  I'd say the KTM should be more jealous of the Yamaha reliability.  It still needs to prove itself to me.

Thank you for posting this, and I really hope you keep posting updates as you get some miles on the Duke.

Ever since the 790 Duke came out, I have had my eye on it. I haven't ridden one yet.

BTW, which year FZ do you have? The 2018 and newer FZ/MT has better suspension than 2014-2017, so that will make a big difference in a comparison. My thought has been that both HP and torque wise that the Duke is quite a bit more, and you combine that with KTM's famous handling that it should be clearly the next step up in that style of bike. Arguably the Triumph Street Triple R would be next after the Duke.

.... and then there is the Yamaha's reliability 👍  Can't argue that!

Please keep posting!

Nice bike! After it's broke in and ready for the wild stuff, make us a video so we can see it in action! If you could/would, thanks!

Nice! I want the Adventure R. The FZ is fun but I do miss exploring the gravel roads and 2 tracks like I did on my XR. The old Honda just was fun,, just not enough for any kind of road riding. Nice bike(s)!!

I'll keep posting updates on it.  I decided to buy the 790 after I demo'd one a week ago.  Also got to ride the 690 SMCR supermoto and the 1290 Superduke.

I have a 2017 FZ07 but I'm running Ohlins NIX22 cartridges up front and a Penske double adjustable shock on the rear.  The 790s suspension is only adjustable for preload on the rear but it's much much better sorted out of the box than the 07s (I've demo'd the later model years along with the XSR700s as well).

Put about 220 miles on the Duke so far and keeping it under the break in limit of 6500rpm, it feels very similar to the 07.  Gobs of torque, nimble handling.  Bars are about 1 1/2" wider on each end and have less sweep (adjustable positions on the triple clamp as well).  Pegs feel more swept back than the 07.  Overall comfort is pretty good but I'll change the stock seat out for their taller "ergo" seat.

Also has the best sounding stock exhaust I've heard.  Very deep and throaty and it pops and burbles on the downshifts.  Every video I've watched about the bike doesn't come close to what it actually sounds like.

Can't wait to play with the ride modes and all that after the break in.

Ya, I just sold my 2017 690. Had issues getting performance parts and flashes from North America. Maybe in a few years when more aftermarket parts are available.

Got the bike back a while ago.  Dealership and KTM were quick to fix the issue.  Apparently it's a known problem with the 790 platforms.  They replaced the immobilizer and everything that you can stick the key in (ignition switch, fuel cap, and seat lock) along with 2 new keys.  Bike has been running perfect since the fix and I'm about ready for the 600 mile service.

Added a few parts to the bike as well.  CRG mirrors, OEM LED turn signals, and the Akropovic slip-on.

Now that I'm done with the break-in, I was able to get a few good "spirited" rides in.  The 790 is obviously more powerful than the 07 but it makes its power in the upper end of the tach.  Low-speed torque actually seems to be better on the 07 but it could be due to other factors like the wheelbase (3 inches longer) and longer swingarm making it feel that way.  The 790 doesn't want to wheelie nearly as much as the 07 does.  Anti-wheelie intervenes in 1st and just a tad in 2nd.  It'll power wheelie in 2nd and 3rd (cracking the throttle open quickly) with the system turned off.  Throttle response gets twitchy at low speeds in Sport and Track modes but feels great when riding fast (duh?) so it becomes necessary to switch back to Street or Rain mode approaching lower speed limits to avoid looking like a bucking bronco through town.

The quickshifter and auto-blipper are a joy to use.  I've always been in the "they're cool but not needed on the street" camp but screw it, I'm a believer now.  Banging perfect shifts and blips every single time and not needing to move your clutch hand or flick the throttle in the twisties just makes life better.  The 790 will shift or blip any gear at just about any speed, throttle, and rpm.  Quickly becoming my favorite feature on this bike.

The stock suspension is surprisingly good.  I've completely changed the suspension on my 07 to make it fully adjustable but on this bike, I really don't feel the need at all and I'm the type to look for the slightest reason to change something.  Will probably take track speeds and riding to expose any real shortcomings.  For me, it works great.

Brakes lack some initial bite but are strong.  I'm hoping a simple pad change could fix the initial bite.  Also getting a slight squeak with light pressure just as I'm coming to a complete stop (racebike?).  Happens sometimes but not all the time.  Have yet to notice any intervention from the ABS.  Bike has the option to turn off the ABS for the rear brake only (Supermoto mode) or to completely turn it off.

Speaking of turning features on and off, everything is switchable.  You're able to adjust so much from the dash.  From the DRL on the headlight to Launch Control.  If you make friends with the tech at the dealership and get him to hook up the diagnostic tablet, you can fiddle around even more.  For example, I switched the turn signals to the OEM LEDs (that come on the bike in just about every other country) and instead of buying resistors or flasher relays, I just had to get my tech to switch the bike to "LED mode" in the diagnostic tool.  Neat.

Also worth mentioning, riding at night, this bike has the best headlight I've ever had on a bike.  Or a car for the matter.  Blows away the JW Speaker Adaptive headlight I retrofitted on my FZ07 (except for the lean angle lighting capability).  Great beam pattern and range.  Very wide spread of light and that's before you turn on the high beam.

All that said, I still love my FZ07.  It's just so much fun and with all the tech the 790 has, it's still a blast to get back on the "basic" FZ and be a hooligan.  The 790 is powerful and precise whereas the FZ is simple and playful.  Shes' staying.  I'll keep this post updated as I learn more about the 790.

I have a lingering desire for a KTM but lurking on the forums for the Duke 390 and 790 and reading owners comments about the misty displays on the 390 and the immobilizer glitches on the 790 give me second thoughts. The dealership and factory support feedback isn't too comforting either. I like to have bikes that start up immediately when I turn them on after sitting for a couple of weeks and don't leave me on the side of the road with some malfunction or another. Now if they cost half what they really do, then I might be able to reconcile it.

Thats what's stopping me too.

Great bikes, but I expect a level of reliability and service intervals from my bikes that keep me locked to Japanese brands.

Don't even get me started on the f@#kin Italians...

Ducati is calling to me also but the feedback that I get from former owners and some current owners via forums cool my jets temporarily. Then the desire creeps back...I'm fighting it but it's tough! Pray that I don't come into money soon!

buying the bike isn't the biggest cost.
