How far down the Rabbit Hole will I go?

Guess while I'm on here, I may as well give you an update as to just how far the Rabbit Hole goes, haha.

Had a chance to race again in my backyard, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Came away with a pair of 2nd places in my Lightweight Superbike races.  Although development took a back seat to racing, I decided I need a steering dampener after all.  Not that it really *needs* it, but I think it's a good investment for safety.

I'll be working on fairing stay 2.0 to incorporate a steering damper mount..stay tuned, haha.

In the meantime, I'll leave you with some pics from the event.

Looking and Performing Great Paul. Keep it up, your bike, build and racing are inspiring. Personally, I need some inspiration, I'm way behind on my bike for this season.

Well Ed, maybe this will give you some inspiration...

I just got approved for my PRO license!!!

However, for every action, there is always an equally opposite reaction. Acquiring my MotoAmerica Pro license was actually that "opposite" reaction.

The original action is...I found out I need surgery, which will delay the start of my MotoAmerica campaign, and by how long is TBD.

Some of you know the story about my back. For those of you that don't, I was paralyzed 9 years ago and couldn't walk. Had two bad discs in my lower back that crushed my spinal cord and the nerve that controls my right leg. Had to have an emergency double spinal fusion, and I was told if I didn't stay active for the next 10-15 years I'd need a similar surgery on my neck, due to my lower back being fused and my upper back taking more of the load.
.
Well, despite me being as active as humanly possible for these 9 years, not too long ago I started to get shooting pains in my right shoulder down to my elbow...fingers started to go numb in my right hand, then my hand, wrist, arm, etc.
.
Turns out I have some thinning discs towards the top of my spine crushing a nerve, and I need a multi level fusion in my neck. If I don't do it I'll loose the use of my right arm.
.
This surgery is more routine than my back surgery, but still...sucks to do everything in your power to remain active and prevent further complication, only to get bitch slapped right back into the hospital 9 years later to get the same surgery I worked my ass of to recover from, but on my neck.
.
Irony at its finest.

There are A LOT of positives though. I've been in pain for a while, but thought I pulled a muscle so didn't think much about it. When I went to the doc, I also found out I had a torn meniscus and loss of cartilage in my right knee...and despite the pain and discomfort, I've been racing like this the whole time, and my results on the new bike (6 podiums in 7 races, with the other one being a Top 5 finish) allowed me to acquire my Pro license, so there's that.

Imagine if I'm at full health!
.
And, with this damn coronavirus taking over the world, the MotoAmerica season may not start on time anyway.
.
Surgery is scheduled for late next month, so until then I'll ride until I physically can't, and aim for a speedy recovery so I don't miss too many MotoAmerica races this year 😊

Y'all know I'll NEVER give up!!!

One question why almost if not all track oriented builds use longer exhausts instead of exhausts shorter (like the lenght of akrapovic ti) does a longer exhausts gives more power and torque for your setup?

My apologies...didn't see this until just now.

In very general terms, usually a longer exhaust will move your power farther up the RPM range, which is where you usually are when racing.

But why are new bikes coming with shorter and shorter exhausts? To get more low and mid grunt? Where people rides more on streets? So for exemple an akrapovic carbon with that longe pipe should give more power in upper rpms then a akrapovic Ti wich is shorter?

Sorry for all the questions but i really think that the competition is the perfect lab for gathering information that we could use on streets

It is and it isn't (competition).  I mean, competition DOES improve the breed so to speak, but in some cases, it's not feasible to have high rpm power on a bike that's billed as a sporty street commuter, if that makes sense.

Shorter pipes usually produce more torque, apposed to longer pipes producing more HP. I have a Akra -Ti . It's short and has a lot of torque with the flash. I ride street and some trackdays on a tight course.Perfect for me. If you racing then the motor already makes enough torque, so your looking for that little bit more HP. All comes down to- Yeah you guessed it.......... so many variants., depending on what you need/want/scenario. I ordering a Hordpower air box tomorrow.

Function over form...work has started on Ver. 2.0 of the front fairing for the FZ-07 Racing Prototype...

As much as I wanted to race this bike in my original design, it turns out I need more wind protection after my surgeries this spring (which is the reason why I sold my two naked street bikes).

Turns out, at about 65 mph and above, the wind velocity hitting my throat pushes my esophagus into the titanium plate screwed into my vertebrae behind it and literally chokes me out.  I discovered this when I rode my naked street bikes to work.

Hence, something else was in order. You didn't think a *little* setback was gonna stop me did ya? Haha.

This is the initial rough draft of nose fairing 2.0, to which we're grafting in a Zero Gravity Double Bubble R3 windscreen.

Hoping the improved aero will have a benefit on top speed too!

Edit:  Took it home already and the height and angle is all wrong.  My 'glass guy is reworking it as I type this and should have a revision tomorrow to test :)

The guys who run the Tourist Trophy do this all the time as they are at high speeds for extended periods of time.  I think this mod is great regardless of your needs after surgery.

Thanks!

But in my case, the finished product will be more like the height and angle of a "normal" race fairing.  Mine was so short to begin with it's like it didn't even count, which was the idea - to run it sorta naked.

So now it will be "regular", but custom, if that makes sense, haha.

So, it seems like it's been forever since I've posted an update...

Finally finished the mock up of the revised fairing, to get the height and angle where I wanted.  We've made it to where it'll accept any windscreen for the 2015-2018 Yamaha R3.  I've been using the Double Bubble version from Zero Gravity it's the tallest race fairing they make, and I can always use the Corsa or other variants if I wanted a slightly different angle or height.

 

This was Ver.2 mocked up on the bike:

Since then, I'm now on Ver. 2.623897645 haha.  I've changed the angle to make it slightly more swept back, and brought out the nose more on the leading edge for better aero.

I had my guys at Underground Graphics in Houston, Texas overnight me my livery and new numbers (changed from 138 to 158), so I can get this thing finished up to race next weekend.

I have a new appreciation for the guys who do wrap jobs.  My friend and I tackled it last night since overnighting the fairing to Houston was going to cost over $700.

Took us over 6 hours, and I still have to put the final touches on it.

Double Bubble on the left, and Corsa on the right - both from Zero Gravity.

I like the Double Bubble better.  It's a little taller, but it's more swept back on the sides.

Testing next week at Buttonwillow!

Finally rode it!!!

The main objective was to test the new aero, break in my new suit, and just find my fun-zone. I don’t have any data for Buttonwillow, so I left the lap timer off and just spun some laps for my first two sessions.

The new front fairing/windscreen combo worked flawlessly, and I was able to ride without worry. The new gen.3 suit by Mithos fit like second skin, and looked incredible!  Matches my bike perfectly! 

For the next sessions it was game on and I was able to work my way up to speed and started to find my mojo again.
