HatGuysFriend
Hey, would you guys please watch my video and could someone confirm that this 'popping' sound on start is normal. Its sounds a lot sharper/nastier in person. Doesn't come through so well on the video. Also, any way to test the turn signal relay? cassecou
If you have a popping sound, could it be a short?
Premium Member GAZ Posted November 1, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted November 1, 2014 Mine has this popping sound. I only hear it with the seat off. I noticed it when installing my exhaust.

jerryv
Can't hear it on the video, but I think you are right ... must be a relay in there.
stefano225
I heard that also when seat was removed,I think it's the starter relay, normal in my opinion.
jerryv
There is one in there. http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/53a99b09f8700220a4415855/electrical-
YZEtc
It's how an electromagnetic relay works: The small electrical current at the starter switch on the handlebar controls the large electrical current required to crank the electric starter. Hitting the starter switch energizes an electromagnetic coil that moves a contact within the relay that's beefy enough to complete the electric motor starting circuit without melting, and this clicking noise you hear is that contact moving. HatGuysFriend
Thanks So much everyone! I did think it might be a short, but I'm glad to see this is normal, and appreciate the confirmation and you guys taking the time to respond. You all are great. I'm going to have some sweet mods to show soon, and some tear downs for the archives. Thanks. zoopants
Did you post about this on Reddit? I could have sworn I read the same thing on there.
Guest Ralph
Was listening to mine the other day and with the seat off it does make a strange sort of noise but it is the starter relay and I am not worried by it.
HatGuysFriend
Did you post about this on Reddit? I could have sworn I read the same thing on there. Yup. I sure did. Haha. Someone there solved it for me. Had two blown fuses.[a style=height:20px;width:40px;opacity:0.85;border:none;background-color:transparent;background-image:url(data:image/png][/a][a style=height:20px;width:40px;opacity:0.85;border:none;background-color:transparent;background-image:url(data:image/png][/a] Yamaha FZ-07 '15 Honda Shadow VT750DC '06 - for sale Kawasaki Ninja 250r '08 - for sale Previous Bikes: Kawasaki Eliminator 125 '
steviede
Yamaha starter relays are loud on all Yamaha's. Their ATV's use the same one I think, and they are loud too! nothing to worry about there, you just don't hear it when the seat is on. 2015 Matte Metallic Grey FZ-
onuro
I was just going to ask if you've checked the fuses but yeah, that would be the only trouble. Otherwise your starter relay sounds pretty perfect
