Is it just the 18 model?

Is it just the 2018 model or me but trying to put the key in my bike with gloves on is a f'ing pain in the ass? It isn't in a good position and I really don't know how or if there is a way to resolve my issue. Not super important but after a while it gets really old how difficult/annoying it can be to do this

It's a combination of poor position and for some reason yamaha's key ports are oddly stiff.  My ninja 250's key would go in so easy even if the angle wasn't perfect but on the MT if it's 5 degs off you can forget it.  If you ever put on any kind of a wind screen it'll only get harder and forget it if you add a key ring and a second key like for a top case or wheel lock.

Yea I added a second key for a lock. HUGE pain now. I hate the position of it, not easy to get to. Also exactly like you said, it doesn't want to go in right if it isn't perfect. I guess I'll have to learn to live with it....

That isn't too bad if that is the only thing that I dislike about it so far tho. Thanks for the quick response!

I'm seriously considering safety wiring the key into the ignition so it can't be removed without cutters and then wiring in a hidden toggle switch that's easier to get to then the damn key.

I haven't really experienced any issues with my '18, but I only have one key on the ring and have had the bike since April 13th, so maybe I just got used to it haha 🤷🏼‍♂️. I do wanna get a windscreen at some point and I expect I'll run into some issues then.

I can only recommend to try a different procedure. I've had to do that (take the gloves off) with bikes/things in the past so I made it a habit to put the key in before I did anything else and then you can put your glove on before your hand gets real cold. You get used to it like anything else that isn't perfect. For me, that's a lot of things. What irritates me about my gloves is I can't put the helmet strap on with the gloves on so I always have to remember to put the gloves on 2nd. I understand the annoyance.

After about 14k miles the key port is starting to loosen up pretty well on mine. A buddy with a Super Tenere says his was same, but at around 30k miles his key has gotten pretty easy to slip in.

Mine annoyed me so bad I showed it to the dealer to make sure I didn't have a bad switch. He said they hear it all the time on Yamaha's, but that it would eventually loosen up. Hang in there!

What he said^^^^. Different procedure needed, I personally always put the key in first, zip jacket, helmet, left glove, ignition on,right glove, start.

I dunno, I'm at 9k on my 2018, and my ignition is still finicky.  Gotta have *just* the right angle and such, and of course it's on the far side of the bars/gauge and hard to see in the dark, while being close enough to the console that you can't really grab it well with gloves on.

There aren't a lot of things I don't like about the MT07, but this is definitely one of my bigger gripes.

That it's such a trivial thing speaks to how wonderful the bike is 😃

I completely agree with you, really shows how good it is and I really do like that

Mine is a pain in the ass too. If you haven't tried to do it at night in an unlit parking lot, you're in for one hell of an aggravating experience. After that, doing it during the day isnt too bad, I dont rock a windscreen (cant find 1 I like for the 2018) but if u stick it straight down I mean straight it goes in everytime

I disagree, I tried it in a parking lot in the back seat of a '78 Cougar and the experience was awesome! 😃

I haven't seen a windscreen that I like for the 18 either. I love the look of not having one sooooo much better but I know that it would be nice to have one

I've been riding for a minute and trust me when I say you truly dont need 1 on this bike. I thought about getting a little black one (aluminum) just for aesthetics but decided against it because I'm not paying 300 bucks 😂. Over the next year they will release more affordable quality stuff for the 2018+ models. I rode for 3 hours at 95mph yesterday and didnt think about a windscreen once, it was a smooth ride! Louder bluetooth speakers in my helmet, that's a different story. But yeah on the hwy just rest chest on gas tank and you'll be fine! If its windy slow it down to 70mph and you'll be fine! I'll post if I find that little black aluminum windscreen for our bikes.

@Vex what Bluetooth do you use? I just have some Bluetooth earbuds and they work pretty well and they have a built in mic and I've tested them and with call quality, it isn't that bad at speed

Yep mine can be difficult to get in the key slot. I have been wondering if it was an issue.  One day I got gas and had a hell of a time getting the key back in the ignition. Maybe some powdered graphite wound help it?

@Vexalso amazon has a decent looking windscreen for cheap. Not sure if it is your style or not. 2083952375_Screenshot_20190104-012157_AmazonShopping.thumb.jpg.fd075ce814bc3191f5ca7cc27365f8ca.jpg

I'm not sure if these fit our bikes lol. I may just buy it for the sake of science. Also, vagabond sliders are legit worth the 100 bucks, r&g rear axle sliders look good too and are easy to install (revzilla). If either of you guys with the 2018 buy an exhaust & tune please post what you got and how it sounds. Idunno about the graphite thing I normally just force the key straight down and it works alright

I have T-Rex frame sliders and case savers. I did the @2wheeldynoworkstune for my ECU with the full yoshi works exhaust and love every bit of it. I'll post a video of how it sounds soon for you @Vex20181226_233832.thumb.jpg.64f03ac48d9eab83afc50fc5292aba82.jpg20181227_123255.thumb.jpg.369a3d289c2d802208236711ee64fbb0.jpg
