RojoRacing 2018 MT-07 Build

My poor retired ninja 250 did it all from tearing up the canyons, delivering pizza, winning races and even 1000+ mile trips carrying a MTB so I could do endurance races in other states. That being the case the new MT has very big shoes to fill. My build won’t be the most sexy or the fastest but it’ll do more then most others would think of doing.

Ive already started to do a few cosmetic changes while I wait for the long weekend over thanksgiving to really kick off the bigger changes.

Today I mounted CRG lane splitter mirror that fold in with a light tap.  They work pretty good but I do kind of miss how solid and clear the stock mirrors were. Oh yeah for anyone wanting to remove their stock mirrors, before you strip the 17mm nut, it’s reverse threads.

Yes I removed the warning sticker post pic and yes it was a PITA.

I installed a sound bomb mini horn which is pretty plug and play with no wire splicing needed. If you get in and it doesn’t work, try tightening the set screw a turn at a time and see if it comes to life.  Notice the unused mounting plates that came with the new horn in my hand?

So so I added those bends to the mounting plates Along with a little matte black paint and created a passenger peg eliminator kit, got to love free shet.

install a driven racing halo fuel cap because I hate pulling my key every time I go to fuel up and I imagine with a wind screen future custom phone mount access to the key ain’t going to get any easier. I’ve wanted one of these for like 7 years but no one made one for the ninja 250. It’s a quick 1/4 turn doing loaded lock that has a very nice feel to it. Hardest thing will be where to put the cap when refueling.

So with the help of magic.....um I mean magnets, I solved my cap placement during fueling problem. JB weld a magnet neodymium magnet to the bottom of the cap and two side tape another opposing magnet to the brake  reservoir and you can attach it there with little risk of dropping it on the floor.

Pulled the MTB/Top box mounting plate from the ninja and sized it up against the MT. Matches up pretty well except from the front leaving open a rather large whole because of the seat shape. Not sure where I’m going to mount it to the subframe or how I’m going to hide that hole but it all close enough that I’m sure I can reuse it on this bike.

Mods over Thanksgiving weekend while hanging out with the family and making dad be took b**ch for the day. Capped the weekend off with a rather damp 200 mile ride up over Mt. Hamilton and the surrounding canyons with dad on his 848evo.

Welded on some proper frame nuts for swingarm spools, still have no idea how Yamaha fu**ed this up so bad by forgetting how every street bike needs spools. I can weld just fine but I do so so irregularly that when I comes to things that must look perfect on the first shot I take it to a friend who is a pro.

First a little prep work to ensure a clean weld, don’t forget to disconnect your battery when welding to a vehicles chassis.

Onto the light show, impressed my phone captured the arch without blinding itself.

Next on the list was the Yosh R77 full Exhaust with new Works header coating. This was a bit of a PITA getting the nuts and bolts to all line up for the required bracket to work but when finally done it was very solid. The sound reminds me of a strait pipe flat track bike and not so dissimilar to dads Ducati. In fact when we both launch of the line together in a race start fashion I can’t tell if I’m hearing his or my bike. Although I will admit the duc is still 20% louder with his aftermarket exhaust which can only be discribed as MotoGp levels of noise. The ninja 250 with full exhaust was never more impressive than a suped up lawnmower so this is a welcome change.

I also installed a DNA filter at the same time but forgot to take pics. Bike did run a bit flat in parts of the rpm range but that should change when I get my ecu back next week.

Because I can be a lazy SOB and have been known to ride for over 1000 miles in a day I opted for an auto chain Oiler. I had the electronic Scott Oiler on the ninja which worked great for a couple years till it just died on me. This time I chose a cheaper and more simple style of Oiler. It’s self contained needing no vacuum or electrical hook ups to the bike, it runs on gravity and vibration. I’m very impressed on how cleanly I was able to set it up without the need to extra wires or hoses.

No my heel doesn’t hit it, and it’s set just far enough out that chain slap should just miss it. This product will most likely be a deal breaker for anyone not on black wheels because I’ve never seen an auto Oiler not get a wheel dirty.

I know I’m going to be killing most of not all my hooligan appearance points with this next one but that just means I’ll need to do twice as many wheelies leaving the local supermarket to make up for it. I think it’s 35liter givi monolock top case which served me well the last 120,000 miles on the ninja if you couldn’t tell from its weathered appearance. It’s large enough for one helmet plus boots or other soft items like clothing. Also works well for carrying a weeks worth of food for one person if you still fly solo.

It’s mounted to a slow moto tech(something like that) seat plate which I’m not very impressed with but is good enough for now till I get my hand on a proper fabrication shop again in the future.

Next on the list was the woodcraft clipons with 1.5” riser mounted in the down position plus 20mm riser spacers to give just enough bar to take clearance to not crush your thumb. Without the 20mm spacers it won’t hit your tank with only a single mm of clearance so if you can avoid ever turning to full bar lock you’ll be ok without them. The drastic change in position with the clipons means the clutch and throttle cables were no longer happy with their original routing. I had to disconnect the clutch and throttle cables from there respective attachment points and feed them back through the motor several times before I was happy with their routing.  This was hugely time consuming and kept me up till 2am the first night but worth the effect for kink free cables.

Next I added a Brembo RCS19 master cyclinder because I liked the RSC15 I had on the ninja so much. The feel on a proper radial master makes an even larger difference toward solid feeling brakes then even stainless steel lines. If I could only chose one or the other I’d go for the upgraded master every time. I didn’t do the brake lines at the same time because I need to take measurements first with all the new parts to get proper custom fitted lines made, they’re in the mail as of today.

Take note of the clearance between the brake reservoir and wind screen, well touch on that in a minute.

Here’s a pic of the same CRG clutch lever I’ve been using ever since 2006 when they first sponsored me. This is not just the same model, it’s actually the same 12 year old lever I’ve carried over from bike to bike. It’s unique in the you can change the leverage ratio of the clutch pull for ether a more instant pull or longer more gradual pull. Right now I have it set for a smoother more gradual pull whereas on the ninja I had it set to the more forward instant pull ratio. Different bikes different flavors I guess.

CD0901DA-69E9-4098-BF09-5DA46AB1A3B3.jpeg

Last but not least is the puig new generation windscreen to compliment my givi top case. For a touring screen I’m a little disappointed on how short it is I was expecting 2-4 inches higher. On one hand it doesn’t completely kill the look of the bike like s your screen does to a sport bike but on the other hang I’m unsure if it’s going to kill enough wind to be useful. I’ll need to get it on the hwy a few more times to give a final judgement. I did have to make larger mounting spacers for the rear to get enough clearance between the brake reservoir and screen.

Good Luck with the list, when I got my Ecu flashed by @2wheeldynoworks I asked about benefits of changing to aftermarket air filter. There response was little to none over OEM.

I can't wait to see the folding license plate and the wireless phone charging system will be something outlandishly new.

#18. On the list !!!!!😉

They're a little pricey but it looks good, thanks.

Yes they are but when you ride as much as I do you tend to appreciate quality stuff a bit more. I’d say they’re worth $100 but hey  I can’t make it myself so what’s a guy to do.

Seems like you need a bike that can be converted sport bike to commuter to touring rig. I commute, tour and sport ride on mine and have found ways to morph the bike from one need to another. The best rack system I found is from SW Motech. The seat rack replaces the pillion seat and is able to be released with the key same as the pillion pad. I carry a dog crate some times didn't trust the latch mechanism controled by the key, it looks like you'll have your MTB and would want to eliminate an accidental release as well. I bolted the systems bottom half in a way the circumvents the key controlled latch. The top plate of the system is held on with four bolts and is very easy on-and-off from the base. I have three different boxes/crates that I need to be able to swap between quickly and easily. I drilled a four hole pattern into the boxes that matches the bolt pattern on the rack system and using longer bolts can switch between boxes in under five minutes. Check it out:

https://www.twistedthrottle.com/sw-motech-seat-rack-for-yamaha-fz-07-14-16

Can't exactly figure out how the bike mounts on the rack you showed. Got a pic with the bike on board? I also carted my road bike to races many years ago.

ABS =  Audible Blinker System. The horn beebs every time I use the blinker

Edited post #2 back on the first page with the mods from this past weekend.

Windscreen

brembo master cyclinder

yosh pipe

tutoro chain oiler

givu top case and pilon seat plate

clutch lever

woodcraft clipons

DNA airbox

Not in the post was discovering that the FZ abs MT07 use the same brake pads as the 2006 and newer R6 and R1(before they went 6 piston). I have boxes of these EBC racing pads left over from my hay day so it’s a luck find to discover they fit. The backing plate is an exact match, the only difference is the oem pad friction material covers slightly more surface area then the ebc pads. I figure it’s a different of maybe 3-5% so in theory there’s a little lost potential there, maybe ebc pads made for the FZ have this extra material added?  Even still the outright snappiness of the braking performance was night and day after the swap. The reason I have boxes of brand new left over ebc HH pads is because the factory Yamaha team turned us into their secret of using oem R1 and R6 pads, so I was surprised how much better the EBC pads felt in this bike. I’m aware the FZ doesn’t get the full metallic sintered pad material treatment as oem but still the difference was larger then I remembered.

Minor update while I’m too sick to ride my bicycle and my ECU is still in the mail. Centralized magnetic phone mount because I can’t stand my phone mounted off to the side at some wired angle. Still working on ideas on how to cleanly add wireless charging to this but for now I can at least swipe no when google maps tries to reroute me due to traffic.  This may look a bit funny for those still riding without a windscreen but it tucks nicely behind my tour screen.

Altogether this cost

$3 in Stinson strong tie plates

$1.19 for a 10pc bag of #8 nut & bolts

$5 in neodymium magnets round 0.75”x.062”

Note: the magnets must be quality Neodymium if you expect your phone to be secure. If you’ve never worked with neodymium magnets before and are rolling your eyes at the price of them just know they are like 10 times stronger then magnets twice their size.

2 magnets stuck to my phone case and 2 on the mount make for a very strong mount. You can push the lock and volume buttons through the phone case without the phone shifting on the magnets. Beauty of a two point magnet mount is you can basically toss you phone at it and it’ll snap into the same position every time. No need to center it onto some plastic snap ring you can see and rotate is 90 degrees. The down side is I can rotate it to landscape mode without adding another horizontal plate and 2 more magnets which would kind of kill the simple clean look. I can’t think of a reason I’d need landscape mode on my motorcycle so I’m not going to worry about it just yet. I could add a larger single magnet in the center of the phone and be able to rotate it but then that kills the ability to wireless charge.

"New rage cycles made fush mounted tail tidy with blinkers  and front blinkers I love it and they are very sturdy and bright"

I take it those front blinkers won't mount on my '15 Fz-07.

RojoRacing  nice work, I have some similar mods, Mt Hamilton in the bay area?

Like your spool idea vs. drilling holes in swingarm but requires professional welding.

Nice clutch lever, saw your 2012 you tube and want one. Any reason to pay extra for the perch?

Why  DNA vs. Hord filter, as I have the Hord with JD's flash?

Mt Hamilton is next to San Jose so yes it’s Bay Area if you’re in the bay you owe it to yourself to ride that road. Very low traffic, caters to the more skilled riders with lots of corners. Careful of black ice if you go over the mountain and descend the north side as there are 3-4 left hand corners that’ll bite you this time of year.

2012 YouTube? Not sure what you mean by that other then maybe I posted a video back then about something.

Paying extra for a better perch on ether the brake or clutch is a matter of preference for ether. On the brake you do it because you want to change the feel of you brake via the master cyclinder. On the clutch side if you get something quality it’ll pivot on sealed ball bearing and have more adjustments then just in or out. If I didn’t already own the whole clutch assembly from before I would have just gone cheap eBay level of my choice for awhile.

Im more concerned with a smooth power curve and fuel economy over pure HP for track use. Air boxes do a good job of keeping your filters cleaner longer as well as control the air flow in a positive manner. I would have gone K&N filter but just wanted to try something new with the DNA since the mold quality on their product seemed slightly better.

Favorite local twisty is Redwood Rd out of Castor Valley.

too many yahoos who can't hold their line both on bike and cars in that area, plus there's always a f**king cop in there every time I go through there.  Pretty sure we lost one of the original AFM members to a honda civic over the double yellows on redwood like 10 years ago.
