One of our trackΒ vendors, Trackside Labs, finished up my fork refresh and they are on their way back. My forks were built with Andriani cartridges as that was about all that was available back when I built this thing in 2015. They have their knocks but have held up well and perform beautifully when dialed in. There are probably better carts available now but these remain a pretty cost effective option as the price has come way down. Aside from the carts, the forks were a little ragged. As mentioned in other threads the bushings were beyond toast. The upper had virtually disintegrated and had really fouled the fluid. We're good now tho.

Pittrace is a twins double header this year too, woot!

Β

Here's a couple pics of what's gonna happen to my head,

And the throttle bodies,

I saw Brandon from Trackside Labs did a facebook video about the Andriani cartridges the other day.... He mentioned they were off a FZ-07..... I wondered who they might belong to???? He hadΒ some nice things to say about them too 😎. He's got my Ohlins rear for for a refresh right now. What a great guy to work withΒ πŸ‘-

I decided to take this;

I've torn itΒ all apart a couple times to look it over and clean it up. There's nothing special about it and normal tools are all thats needed. I just like to get the smeg out and fresh lube in once a year as a matter of course. I love rain races and have noticed the linkages collect all manner of crap off the track and rear tire especially since I don't run a rear mud gaurd or fender. The tolerances are rather sloppy and loose on the linkages, the swingarm pivot is tighter and better sealed with rubber cups and caps.

I did mine today... Just like you said, REALLY easy!!! I've never ridden my FZ-07 in the rain, but picked up some serious grime/tire debris over the last two seasons. I wiped everything clean, and greased everything. Once I get my parts back from powder coating, (from @shinyribs), I'll be putting it back together. I was surprised (even though you warned me about it) at the "sloppiness" of the OEM linkages- WTH???? It works,  but I expected more from Yamaha.... Thanks for the help- 😎

Putzin along, I dropped the motor for a swap when the new one is finished.

I'll be able to clean up some more wiring while I have it down this far too,

As you guys know, the shock levers on the back of the engineΒ cases, so I pulled it off to get it out of the way. Doing so reminded me of anΒ oldΒ gripe with the JRI. You had to relieve the clevis and the shock chop for clearance. (Or fab a new clevis which some guys did)

IMG_20181209_080407.thumb.jpg.97cf3469518e25d8bd408062cd431f84.jpg

(Weird colors are a result of camera flash)

Β

You also had to shim the clevis side to side because it was too wide, you can see the washers and grinderΒ work here...

Hope to start going the other way soon

The Nitron cleavis is a work of art.Β  The fit and finish was perfect.Β  The valving, not sure as I'm a novice.Β  I'm tempted to send the shock to a 3rd party shop with a shock dyno to see what they say.Β  Do many shock shops have dynos?

When you and your buddies don't New Years party and are in a race to see which one can waste more time doing dummer shet;

Β

Buddy tearing down and measuring up an R6 (roller 162lbs) and a FZ07 (roller 175lbs) for a possible motor swap...

Β

Me modding an old engine stand...

I noticed a monster BansheeΒ (RZ350) 2 stroke might fit in here pretty well, 100 hp, half the weight of fz motor...

Now that would be a miserable pig to race

How are the fz07 powered R6's doing at the track? Β Really that much faster? Β What were they calling them R7X's?

Good question, I'm not sure. I've yet to run against one or see race results from one. I'll have to dig into it a little more, maybe my buddy already has, I'll have to ask him. I would think the handling would be great if they get the balance and cg dialed in.

Β

I know the power curve of the built stoker Banshees is crazy. From like 35 hp at 6000rpm to 100hp at 9000rpm, lol. That's gotta be a butt rocket!

The banshee motors were in production till around 2012 I think. Β Some countries, including ours, frowned on 2 strokes. Β Congrats to yamaha for producing 2 stroke engines the longest. Β  In fact, they are the only one still producing a 2 stroke Jet ski. Β But is only sold for "racing". Β Ha ha. Β All my buddy had to do was join the IJSBA and show his card to the dealer.

FZ07 motor in R6 chassis. Lateral looks good, sproket is lined up nicely but vertical is gonna need some clever engineering but can be done. Airbox will be a challenge too.Β

Why?

Because Yamaha didn't.Β

Stuff should be back from TWF next week or so. Ready for some building fun.Β  Finally got everything mocked up the way I want it so it's time to get it finish welded, ground, blasted and a coat of bbq black paint.

Funny thing how peripheral costs add up during theseΒ little projects.Β

Β

I gassed up the wheeler and spilled gas all over myself, typical.

Start grinding on this thing and set myself on fire, all good.

Stumble outside to put myselfΒ out in the snow, again.

Mail lady just waves at burning manΒ in driveway and drives off.

Β

I guess normal is a matter of perspective and different in every neighborhood.Β Β

Back to Fleet Farm for another pair ofΒ Carhartts.Β

Driveway looks good tho;

I know this may belong elsewhere as I'm not a racer, but I do intend on doing at least 1 track-day this year, maybe more if I can. In preparation for 2019 in general, I installed the woodcraft 1" riser plate in the down position. It was straight forward enough as shet goes, take all the controls and bars off, including dash. Drill out the holes for the control nub's, re-install it all, check for clearances and binding in clutch and throttle cables, signals and lights work.Β All good, but it was way too cold to ride.Β I had to test it out, so I did a quick 4 mile loop for feel and gratification. You know it's cold when you turn on the cold water tap to wash your hands and it feels warm.Β I parked her for 3 days until today.

It was abnormally warm here for this time of year, 60 degrees. I ran out about 120 miles back roads of Arkansas and Missouri, 3 hours total, and what a difference it makes to the feel and feedback from the front end. I get to do it again tomorrow if the weather reports are correct, and IΒ couldn't be happier. I truly thought I wouldnt get to have this opportunity until at least late February, which is a long wait for me. Next bleed brakes,Β change fork oil, flush radiator,Β order tyre's, and see how much $$$ are left to do something only a bike owner can understand.

I don't do farkle BTW. Glitter should be illegal !.

Um, I believe it says 'track talk' at the top of this page, so it dern well does belong here.

Β

Good on you for venturing to the track, you'll have a blast. With your simpleΒ mods your bike should be ready to let you test your metal. Track days are a fun and safe (ish) way to feed the adrenaline bug. "I hated it", said no one ever.

Β

Now, let's have no more talk of glorious rides and open roads and warm days till the yard in the above pic reappears. I will hunt you down, I know some people....
