2019 season prep

Recommended Posts

mossrider

Unfortunately for y'all I have very little else to do and a 900 day winter to do it, sooooo here comes this off seasons thread. As mentioned elsewhere I have a few projects to bloggerate about.

Project 1, getting room in the shop for my truck, was basically to rub the wardens nose in it since she can't park a hot wheels car in her garage. Ha!

Project 2. A. Getting the forks off to be refreshed and B. the bodywork off for rebuild and repaint.

Bike sitting in a corner, stripped to her drawers. I refreshed the shock for MotoAmerica midseason so gonna let that go for now. I will refresh the linkages, swingarm pivot, and just might cut off the subframe and make a removable gp tail section.

Fairings stripped of stickers and graphics getting ready for a good sand and fiberglass work. The upper is busted good on the right side, thanks Tony. The tank I flailed when I cannon balled it off t3. I already fixed the lower and tail from that one.

Forks waiting for a box and label

I'll put up more pics of bodywork as I go. I don't do car-show quality work but it looks good enough from trackside as I glide by.

I also forgot about that extra motor. I haffa do sumpin with that dern thang. Stay tuned.

Xtra motor?

What're you got planned for it?

Not all that much this time. I think I'll put cams in and port the head.  Leave stock pistons in it and stay outta the bottom. I learned that lesson, I'll leave that to the more serious folks out there.  Then maybe I'll bore my throttle bodies (only have 1 set of those) and have 2 similar and reliable mid/upper 80hp motors. Plenty of fun for club racing and an occasional up class romp.

Speaking of motors, guys are getting +100 hp now and have discovered north of 90 you need rods and 5th gear gets iffy. Flirt with 100hp and 4th gear starts to go. You're also refreshing them routinely. Power? You bet. Fun? Absolutely. Affordable? What's your budget.

100hp would be fun

Can't afford it though

Wouldn't mind seeing 85-90 though

Its nice at 72 with the 2wdw flash but I feel I should be nearly thrown off the seat when I accelerate

Looks like expensive upgrades are in my future

Had been flailed by the idiots chest that crashed it so it just needed to be reinforced from beneath and the gel coat fixed.

you could try to use some Kevlar to keep everything together In case of a crash, will be just an extrema ratio but there are no real disadvantages

Yes , is 6 times more expensive but I’m talking about a 10 dollar yarn just to make a “net” to avoid losing pieces .

kevlar has no compression strength,  so ,can’t be used just like carbon fiber or glass ! but a “ safety net” may be worth the 10 dollars

Clay bar. Maybe buff afterward. No worries.

In your original post, you mentioned refreshing the swing arm pivot points, and linkage.... Have you gone in there yet? I'm asking because I'm getting my Ohlins  serviced/rebuilt by Brandon @ Trackside labs (Dropping it off on Saturday). I was thinking I may take a look @ the pivot points/linkage as well. Do you know if I need any "specialty tools" to service the swing arm pivot points? I'm still running the OEM "link". I figure if that wears out, I've probably got enough friends with the "AP link" that I could pick an OEM link up from one of them? Let me know, what you know, about the swing arm pivots... Hope to hear from you soon-

I've torn it all apart a couple times to look it over and clean it up. There's nothing special about it and normal tools are all thats needed. I just like to get the smeg out and fresh lube in once a year as a matter of course. I love rain races and have noticed the linkages collect all manner of crap off the track and rear tire especially since I don't run a rear mud gaurd or fender. The tolerances are rather sloppy and loose on the linkages, the swingarm pivot is tighter and better sealed with rubber cups and caps.

I may be selling my AP Link soon.....   PM me if you're interested.  I believe I'm going to go a different route for the rear suspension.  I'll probably be pulling the trigger right around Christmas.

So, without proper supervision it seems I keep getting further into the rabbit hole.

Got the throttle bodies removed...

Forks should be back next week from suspension shop

IMG_20181117_125832324_resized.thumb.jpg.f773b70a465491b40e2946b5029ab6cb.jpg

I had a spare fleabay motor. It was shipped to me with 5000lbs of Styrofoam peanuts.  Beware if you get anything shipped from me....

IMG_20181117_125604305_1542461586038_resized.thumb.jpg.2d5ea3f748736ddabaf9af2183546fca.jpg

Pulled the head off the spare motor to ship, along with the throttle bodies, to TWF Racing. He's going to bore the TB's, port the head and put a set of Web cams in while he's mucking around in there. Should end up with 2 moderate, mid 80hp, reliable(ish) superbike motors.

IMG_20181117_125648937_resized.thumb.jpg.1d9703b4c379913389f100166a19fe8a.jpg

Motor looked to be in good shape, was allegedly a low mile motor out of a wrecked bike.

When I get every thing back we'll degree em in and get it on a dyno for a tune.

No, you didn't get a factory special... Unfortunately, you were either blatantly lied to, or the sales person didn't have a clue 😕.... (probably the later)-  Either way, you got a REALLY nice bike that doesn't "need" a five-valve motor, or the extra BS that goes with it-
