I bought a new '17 FZ-07 a couple months ago. I also have a big 1200 BMW sport touring bike. The new bike is a joy to ride. 250 lbs lighter but the same power to weight ratio as the bigger bike. It's quick and nimble and a blast for short rides into town or through the twisties.

The biggest problem with the bike is a toggle switch action on the throttle. Real jerky because of emission standards. An ecu reflash will fix that. Search this forum for more info.

This forum is a great resource. Friendly and helpful people who know their stuff here.

Ok...I’ll have to look up toggle switch action. For the most part, “take it easy at first”, is what I’m getting. Thanks for that info

07 a Sport Bike?

FacePalm.png

Yeah, I’m sure I said something wrong...but damn triple face palms. You know, when you go on dealer sites, they called hyper naked, sport (not to be confused with super sport)...but you knew what I was talking about, right?

I know what you mean--seems more like a "standard" motorcycle, but Yamaha Canada does list it as such:

https://www.yamaha-motor.ca/products/list.php?group=MC&catId=79

BTW is that a triple facepalm I see there?

Yep, palm all through the face. I’ve seen them be called different names. However, when you speak of motorcycles in general, or in comparison to cruisers (which I love when people refer to all Harley’s as cruisers), this specific bike is considered “sport”. Then, you hear “hyper naked”, I’ve heard them called “sport touring” due to upright seating position. Oops...my bad. Lol

Hey welcome @AngieD700. I'm really interested in your P.O.V. on the MT07 versus your Harleys, since I've been curious to try a cruiser for a while. I'm particularly curious how you think the MT compares to a Sportster.

Anyhow, enjoy the new bike, and my vote for your first upgrade is shorty levers.

Thank you!! I’m excited. Cruisers are definitely different...you can tell that in the weight. I’ve had many friends that went from Ninjas and GSXR’s to cruiser, for comfort...def not speed. It really depends on what kind of riding you want to do. I had fun on my 883...she was small, but so much fun to ride. Most sportster, and cruisers for that matter, have forward controls, so I’m sure that changes the riding experience.

I believe the HD 883 was lower than the MT07 as well...and it’s a little heavier. Truth be told, if I could have both, I would...

Welcome to the forum. I don't really have much to add on the temperment of the MT-07--it's pretty much been covered already in the previous welcomes, but I think you'll love it. Have fun and be safe. 😉

about as effective as a Band-Aid on a shotgun wound. 😁

In all seriousness, a small windscreen on the MT-07 isn't a bad idea. The little windscreens at least keep your torso from becoming a parachute at highway speeds, and they also keep the bugs off the back of your instrument panel. There is plenty of info here on the forum about the different windscreens available for for the 07, though I'm not sure what can be had for the 2018 model: it has a slightly different bolt pattern for the windscreen than the earlier models. 😀

The MT range has been called 'sport' from the MT-01 onward by Yamaha.

Haha!! Good to know. By the way, love the bike in your profile pic!!

Good point! Yeah, I learned to wear tight jackets in my other bikes because when that wind makes a parachute out of your jacket, it rough. Plus, bugs/crap off the instrument panel is a plus! Thanks!!

That model was my first bike. A despatch riders bike from WW2 - Ariel 350. It arrived in khaki.

Just do it!

Done and done...picked her up today and I could not be happier. Had to ride home in the rain, but it didn’t even matter.

You guys were right, the bike is light and nice in the turns. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

My concerns were the turns and stalling out...and shifting...but it was so much smoother than I expected. The sitting position was not bad either. While my Slim is comfy on the backside, the sitting position was starting to bother me. Def higher on this bike but not bad.

Hand position was nicer...closer together so for me, the wind wasn’t that bad.

I mean, I should have started out with this bike. I can see what people mean about it being a serious but fun bike to ride! Thanks for all the advice!!

Liquidmetal

Congrats! You chose wisely.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Oh, a beauty! Great choice. Yellow wheels....I want those.......😕

And, of course, a better seat comes with the 2018.

Just do it!

The color is an adjustment for me. All my bikes were black, 2 of them all blacked out. However, this dark gray looks so good...very fitting of the bike. Shocked they’d go with this color wheels though...love it though. So very happy.

Question does a slip on exhaust make any difference? I had slip ons in my Harley and while it didn’t increase power like a full exhaust upgrade would have, it did give a little more power and made it considerably louder. Thanks for any info!!

Bike is so damn fun...what a difference!!

Nice bike! Welcome and congrats! It depends on how you look at it. The stock exhaust is quite heavy so if you like the idea of a lighter bike (around 10 lbs. lighter) you may want to opt for a full exhaust. Cutting off the end of the pipe on the stock exhaust and installing a slip-on might make it look good and sound good but you aren't shedding any weight (EDIT: Sorry, I'm wrong about that, I forgot where the cut was made so you do lose considerable weight with a slip-on pipe.) and the choice to put your stock exhaust back on the bike at the time of sale (if you ever chose to do so) would be gone because you hacked it up. I recently damaged my aftermarket exhaust but guess what, I can put my stock exhaust back on and not have to buy a new one. 😉 Just things to consider, it's your choice.

Word of warning, if you do alter your exhaust be prepared to spend extra money on some type of fuel/air controller that will tune your bike. That really should be done after an exhaust mod, no matter what the manufacturer says. Also, those wheels look real nice but you may want to go to the search engine on this site and do a little research on what works best to clean those wheels without hurting anything else, like say the seals on the chain. GL with her and stay frosty! ☀️

Thanks!! Great info!! Sorry for the lack of knowledge but I didn’t know they cut up the stock pipes for the slip ons...makes sense. As for full exhaust upgrade, yeah, a little out of my budget right now...and you’re right...new pipes, means new air filters, tune up, etc. it’s not that serious for me at this time. Just wanted something louder...she sounds like a weed eater...lol I’m coming from a loud mutha Harley...it will be an adjustment. Lol

i will def look into cleaning this bike right too!! Really appreciate the good advice!!

oh, would you know about ECU tuning?

You're welcome! Not personally, I went with an Dobeck EJK tuner (I'm happy with it) before I knew about a 2wheeldynoworks flash tune for the ECU. That tunes/corrects more quirks than an EJK does. 2wheeldynoworks is a vendor on this site, check them out. GL!

If you don't want to spend a lot on an exhaust system here's an FULL, inexpensive stainless one that's actually cheaper than an M4 slip-on.

https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Complete-Exhaust-Stainless-Muffler/dp/B07476JKQN/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1532877854&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=fz-07+exhaust&psc=1

I couldn't find a video on you tube for it but I would think that this carbon fiber Delkevic would sound very similar. It's about the same size (9" compared to 8" w/ carbon fiber pipe) and a little on the loud side (probably not as loud outside a garage 😉 )but I think you said something about liking it a little loud, has a nice rap to it!

THANK YOU!! I actually was looking at the M4 slip on, which is like $400. However, from previous info given and what I seen online, I have to do some cutting, and I’m not comfortable with that. I’ll def check this out and see how much installation will be. Thanks again

I have had MIVV exhausts on 2 previous bikes. The look , quality and sound are really good.

MIVV pipes are made in Italy.

For the extra $30 it's a big step up in quality over Delkevic or DM.

Oh Yes!!! Without the DB killer. Saw another video on YouTube, that showing these. Still cheap enough to be able to afford the tune up required. Thanks for the video...definitely towards full exhaust over slip ons
