    Was kind of dark, couldn't see a damn thing. Except for the lights. No time lapse on mounting and installation? Will have to get Jake on the assignment. And do they give the desired Tron effect at the hyperspeeds that you are known for? And how are the antiradar properties?

    Tempted to trade DRZ 400SM for a FZ07

    Ah yes, motorcycle seats. The uncomfortable aspect that just leaves you numb after awhile. Had a DRZ400sm. Loved it. You will love the 7 even more. The 7 is basically a faster, heavier SM. Double the hp, fuel injected and with a 6 spd. But the SM is 80lbs lighter and more off road suspension? There's always a compromise. I run my 7 on Shinko 705 dual sport tires. See my intro for pics. Good tires with traction off road and decent/ fine on pave. Recommend them. I run mostly pave and some dirt roads in the SW. Is the seat great? No, 1-1.5 hrs is ok but tougher numb after that. Take breaks or fuel stops. Most I've done is 500-600 miles on both in a day but with lots of breaks. The back half of the SM ride was excruciating, the 7, bearable. Can't say if different seats are better, mine is stock. I tried a wide comfy bicycle seat on the back of the SM, which also allowed me to stretch my legs, but it wasn't great for long rides.

    Great ride, brings back memories. Snow at the top? Last time I was there many years ago, people were filling up their pickup trucks with snow in the middle of the summer, bringing it down to have snow ball fights in the desert.

    Damn fuel gauge inconsistency

    So I am out and about exploring on the Spitfire. 40 miles, Twisties, 2500 ft elevation drop. In my mind, am Guy Martin running the isle of Mann, attacking the corners but with survival a main goal as well. Realistic 40-50mph. Start with 4 bars. Get to town, putter around. Start back up and it's flashing 1 bar. There is no way that I used half a tank in 40 miles going downhill. Just for fun, tilt the bike to the right twice. No change, still flashing 1 bar. Shut off the bike and restart. Bam, magically back up to two bars. Drive a couple miles and quickly drops to one bar but not flashing. Damn fuel gauge inconsistency! Can't believe that no one else has the same issues.
  5. I max fill it because I'm touring and need as much capacity as possible because don't know when or where the next one will be. Drive so fast that there never is time for fuel vaporization. At subsonic speeds, gas in my tank actually liquifies and helps to keep my nuts cool.
  6. Saw someone mention on here that there is a recommended MAX top level when filling the gas tank. What exactly is the top level? And why isn't it engineered to be right up to the brim like I always fill it, to give me max range? Anyone KNOW for sure if it's a problem to over fill when it splashes out from slamming the gas cap closed? I know a guy who does this... JK. Maybe
  7. Motorcycling is an EXTREME sport. The only things keeping you riding upright is two very small contact patches and forward momentum. Never forget this because loss of friction, balance, control and too much adrenalin will remind you painfully, in body and wallet. Mistakes are paid for in blood and flesh, sometimes with your life. There is NO margin of safety like with a car. Road and weather conditions are constantly changing, ride conservatively and intelligently. Ride aware, ride alive, ride happily for a long time. Practice, practice in a parking lot. Read Hough, watch twist of the wrist, relearn your defensive driving habits. Get a full face Snell rated helmet, the highest std. Get the most padding you can afford in your jacket, pants and get Moto boots. Foot injuries are long to heal and you're immobile recovering. Add extra lights on your motorcycle for increased visibility. The brighter the better. Many other vehicles do not see motorcycles because of the small and narrow profile. Your best safety equipment is between your ears. Watch Fortnine on YouTube for valuable information on safety and quality gear. U will learn allot on gear, bikes and safety. Stay out of blindspots, doubly attentive at intersections and oncoming or merging traffic, drive defensively, always aware and have an exit plan/ route at all times. Stay in the slow lanes and follow traffic, avoids being cutoff till your avoidance skills improve. Never drive faster than your ability or try to keep up with a better or more experienced Rider. There's no room for ego to start. Become a master with your brakes, control, balance, countersteer and throttle. Your life depends upon it. Practice braking and avoidance maneuvers, watch YouTube videos on this. Most newbie riders have a serious crash within the first six months iirc, be extra careful. Practice shifting first in straight line, then add braking. Practice circles clockwise and counterclockwise. Big and wide and gradually sharper smaller. Then turns and braking. Always brake before you enter into a turn. Then progress to figure eights in both directions. Practice a few hours each day but don't overdo. Pick your routes of travel, less traffic is safer. Always give yourself time and space from other vehicles who might not see you. Ride on the far right and with lots of distance/space gaps from other vehicles, if right hand drive country, far left for left drive countries. This is extra reaction time, avoidance insurance. Riding a motorcycle is the closest thing to flying while staying on the ground. Lots of fun but also the most dangerous next to flying. Become a skilled pilot with training, both mental and onbike practical. Your life depends upon it.

  11. Of all the bikes that you owned, which do you miss the most. For me, it's my VF1000f Interceptor, the Grand Daddy of the VFR. V4 smooth power, good looks and at the time, the fastest production Moto. I even had the matching touring bags. One cool retro ride. Still in lust with it. Anyone else got any cool retro ride pics?

    KTM Duke 790 Wow!

    Meh, road my Spitfire just like that on Pike's peak last year. Downhill. Then I woke up when I needed to pee... Actually I did do PP last year, but more like coasted downhill with the ignition off. The adrenaline rush excitement while making 94.2 mpg at 100+ mph! guesstimate of course. FYI. They stop cars half way down to test your brakes with a thermal temperature scanner. Then pull you over, if your brakes are overheated, for a cool down period. Motorcycles they don't even bother and wave right through.

    Great power to weight, typical KTM. Step up from the 7. But, there's always a but. Lol. If they could match it in price or ball park instead of the typical huge premium. And reliability..... The real deciding criteria.
  14. Absolutely. There are carriers for every type of Moto. And there are rigs to carry every type of moto. There are people carrying Harley's on the back of RVs. I pushed the envelope with a minivan. I compromised in certain areas to gain in others. I created a minimal, low cost RV just barely capable to do the job and haul an moto for very little investment. And the less I spend there, the more and longer that I have to tour and travel onmy Spitfire. YMMV. Gain- mpg, cost Loss- handling so I drive prudently What I didn't mention so far is that I tour and live in my minivan so it is loaded from that as well. Supplies, gear, food, water, parts, camping gear, etc... It is not just the bike loading the suspension. Big factor but not the major or only factor. That compromise was easily acceptable to me, my situation, budget and abilities. Now if a rich widow would come running across a meadow towards me, madly in love, the situation would change. Actually am currently contemplating a bigger, roomier, sturdier rig as an upgrade. Overlander style.
  15. Aha, an FZ07! No. This is going to be sacrilege on this forum I know. It would be the KTM Duke 690, at the time. That bike is 50 lbs lighter than the FZ07. Perfect. But. There's always a but. And no such thing as perfection. Not even a KTM. Problem with a KTM 690? It's all about the P's. Price, parts, projected reliability. From my perspective and situation, as a tourer, important aspects. Life is ultimately about compromise. And this is where I get back to the FZ07. It is the perfect compromise. Or mostly perfect. Or bestly perfect compromise. Little heavier, more reliable, parts availability, better price all around, better fuel economy. The cheaper it is overall, the longer and farther one can travel. So I ran the 6R for a year while assessing lighter weight options. The FZ07 was it. Out for a few years, could i get a second hand one for a good deal? New is silly because of all the scrapes and scratches that touring brings. Need a workhorse, not a trophy queen. It will get road rash and battle scarred. Besides, hauling it on the back of a minivan, the uglier it is, reduced theft bait. It is actually painted with plastidip and I don't clean it often. Just an ugly, used old Yamaha dirtbike in lemon yellow. Who would want to steal that? So I have had my FZ07 touring for a year and it's been great. Only complaints are that damn wonky fuel gauge and seat, but they are minor compared to the places I have been, sights I have seen, people met, adventures and explorations. Been Rock solid, great mpg, light and nimble, great joy has ensued. And all thanks to my mobile base camp and my motorcycle hauling rack which gives me the most comfortable, ease to carry and for what I believe is the bestest, lowest cost compromise possible. Did I answer all of your questions Beemer? I hope so cause I certainly tried.
