Palomar Mountain_San Diego County

Just moved to San Diego County and went looking for roads right away.  Found Palomar Mountain and it's just East of me.  I took the 76 from Oceanside heading East. The first 20 miles or so are pretty boring but the traffic dies down and the road gets twisty the further East you get.  The corner on 76 are higher speed than those on the smaller mountain roads. There's food, gas  and a couple of casinos on the way.  Palomar Mountain road is just off the 76 and has A LOT of corners.  It's a great place for a beginner like me to practice corners at slower speeds while not holding up other bikers or cars - at least on a weekday. Scenery is awesome.  If anyone else has been out here I'd like to hear if any other roads in that area  are worth exploring? I posted a video of the trip on YouTube.  I didn't didn't know they had this section on the forum a the time so I didn't plan on posting this and therefore did not mention the forum in the video (I saw Cruizin's recent post about this).   I will post a link to the site in the description of the video.

Skip to the 15 minute mark on the video to see the road. All of the prior is talk therapy for myself.

Haven't been out there yet myself, but Marines in my command aren't allowed out there without taking a "Palomar Riding Course" and I think some kind of check ride. The Palomar Mountain road anyways, not Hwy 76. Apparently a lot of people get hurt out there due to decreasing radius turns. I'd like to do it some day.

It would be a shame to have a marine injured up there.  I hope you get a chance to enjoy it though.

I hit it this morning and it was amazing! Weather was perfect and all the crowds were gone! Stopped at Mothers Kitchen Restaurant and enjoyed a fried egg sandwich on toast with tomato and avocado. Definately bring your A game on this route or else some of those turns will own you.

Fantastic! So nice when the vacation crowd clears. I have to stop at that restaurant next time. The S7 is a nice road too.

I can show you some closer roads if you want. As long as you don't mind me not having my fz-07 any more.

I'm interested. You could be riding a bicycle, cruiser, big wheel, whatever - it would be very much appreciated.

This weekend I'm heading north to ride the 1 because I have a long weekend, but any time after that I'm off work from Sunday-Tuesday and am pretty much down to ride any time.

That road is beautiful! Gonna have to check it out someday. My mom says Oceanside is a beautiful place to live, she visits often. Looking forward to riding the road one of these days.

Thanks for sharing!

Roadrunner: come on down when you get a chance. I'll be happy to show this route or anything else that pops up. I'll be in LA from time to time as well.

she3pdog: Nice bike! A guy in my old building had one. Better looking than the FZ07 in my opinion (headlight, handlebars, seat, forks). Everyone seems to agree that the stock suspension is better too. Looking forward to seeing it.

maxhfz: thanks! Seems like a great place to ride. Hopefully I'll see some of you guys around.

I'll keep an eye on that SD ride thread.

The suspension is definitely better, but still not as good as if you were to get aftermarket stuff for the 07. I like the look of the FZ8 better overall, but the cockpit of the 07 is more pleasing to the eye. I do appreciate the speedo being high enough that I don't have to look down on the FZ8 though. There's no comparison in the power. The engines are wildly different, but I equally enjoy both of their characteristics. The only reason I didn't get another 07 after mine was stolen was to try something new. I'd get it back in a heart beat though if it was ever recovered. The bikes are different enough that owning both would be pretty neat.

Amazing road, there are lots of cyclists out there on the weekends, so expect cyclists on the right side (or middle) of the lane on almost every blind corner.

Ive only rode out there once but it was awesome. I took the S7 and stopped at the "Henshaw Scenic Vista Observation Site" for a breather. That place has some real nice views of the valley and "lake" below. It was the first place that I felt my suspension trully sucked... especially coming down the S6 (which I don't recommend unless you have better suspension!). S6 road is very rough and uneven.
