Rear brake lever adjustment?

Recommended Posts

My rear brake lever seems to travel quite a bit before it bites. I tried bleeding with no success. Is the lever adjustable?

Yes look at the rear of the pedal the rod or bolt that pushes
on the master cylinder is adjustable so you can adjust the pedal
up n down, but check if the lock nut is left hand thread, also
if you look at the bracket it screws into on the pedal you will
see a hole the end of the adjuster rod must be visible in this hole
so you know there is enough thread engaged check for brake binding
after adjustment and make sure when riding you don't ride the brake.
This only adjusts the position of the pedal it wont adjust the amount of free
play.

You may be able to change the position of where the brake pedal is at rest (fully extended), but probably won't be able to change how much it moves before the brakes take effect.

One more precaution.

With this adjustment, you have to be very careful you've not pushed the piston into the cylinder far enough to block the return of fluid to the master cylinder. You can accidentally make that wrong adjustment and still not activate the brake. But after a few brake activations, the fluid will heat up, expand and have no where to go except activate the caliper w/o your foot on the pedal. The result of this will be your coming to a halt and you won't go again until the pads/caliper and fluid all cool back down.
