type of coolant

I've been riding in 100 degree traffic for a couple weeks and coolant is low. Anybody out there suggest any coolant? or should I just go to the local motorcycle shop and get whatever they got?

Suggestions?

I got this stuff cheap at Walmart. Make sure it has core guard (rust) inhibitors whatever you buy. Must be safe for aluminum engines.

My first question would be, "Why is the coolant low?" As in, you shouldn't lose any coolant, normally.

The one thing to be careful of is mixing "types" of coolant, i.e., IAT, OAT and HOAT:

[ul type=disc][*]IAT, inorganic technology; usually the typical green coolant; its cheap and I'd avoid using it[*]OAT, organic technology; usually orange in color; known as DEX-COOL and used by Ford/GM years ago; "extended-life/service interval"[*]HOAT, hybrid organic technology; shares properties of IAT and OAT; today used by most manufacturers, also extended-life; comes in a lot of colors: blue, pink, green, clear, yellow, etc…[/ul]

I like using Zerex G-05, HOAT, phosphate-free, coolant in all my vehicles (mostly European) and its available at Pep-Boys and NAPA. Its the same factory fill for Merc and BMW (colored blue in BMWs). I mix it 50/50 with distilled water, instead of tap ($1 at Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, etc…).

I've used the same prestone pre-mix 50-50 stuff. No problems

Thanks for the insight . I assume it's low because I've been driving in over 100 degree weather, that includes lot's of stop and go traffic. The outside temperature has been over 150 degrees hahahaha that's pretty dog gone hot.  Probably just evaporates, definitely no leaks.

Its a closed system... so it shouldn't be evaporating either (at least not within its service life of 2-3 years). How are you judging the coolant is low? The expansion tank (white plastic tank down by the oil filter) should never be full when the bike is cold. The empty room is to allow for expansion of hot coolant while riding and then when it cools off the level drops again.

Does it say anywhere on the bottle that it's safe for aluminum engines? I can't zoom in close enough to read everything on the bottle and the web site for it doesn't say it either.

I don't know if it's specifically called out, but most cars have aluminum heads these days and blocks as well. I've never ran into issues with G-05 and it's pretty highly praised.

hey @zero per the service manual, you should not mix any type of coolants, it will create an awful gel inside the pipes and will be a big problem later.
You can probably buy the yamaha coolant https://www.shopyamaha.com/product/details/yamacool-high-performance-antifreeze?b=Search&d=33|33&dealernumber= is not expensive check at your dealer, it might be cheaper, yamaha's website is usually overpriced.

Whew!!! Close call then. I wasn't sure if that was just something to get you to buy their product. But yeah I've been reading after you replied and have learned of the issues with mixing. Thanks for that. A lot. Could've been a bad day for sure.

Ooo. One more thing. The yamacool with the blue label "maintenance" and the green label "additive". What's the difference between them. If they're both 60/40 antifreezes? Thanks!!

@zero I guess you are talking about this one https://www.shopyamaha.com/product/details/yamalube-prediluted-engine-coolant?&dealernumber=&rv=true I believe that is only for racing engines, and as it is developed for that use it freezes at 32F, so is not multiseason
.

No. That I've never seen before. It was theses two...

good question, I've never seen that one before either (green one), the one that says maintenance is the same one I sent you on the first link, I think the safest way will be to give them a call and see what they recommend.

Cool, will be looking for your info @zero

So after calling shopyamaha and two dealers all I got was its the blue one that says maintenance lol. That's what's in our bikes stock. I got vague answers about the green label but was told 100% that it's not what I need. Sorry I couldn't find out the difference. I'm going to keep reading and see what I can find.
