Crashed, can I fix this myself? (bent forks)

Came into a corner way too fast today, the road had a bit of gravel, so I made a decision, either low side in jeans or stand it up and try to stop in time. I didn't, and ran the bike down into a 5 foot ditch. Cosmetics I can handle easily, I will probably run it without the tank fairings for a while, but my fork is jacked up. I was able to ride home 60-70 mph, with no vibrations, but you can visually tell it's way out of alignment. I'm getting into it right now. Someone stop me and tell me to take it to a mechanic. http://imgur.com/AP0TKRr

You can do it. What is the fun in having someone else fix it? If course if you have a friend who can help that is good too. Let us know how it goes.

I guess I was asking that if they are actually bent, will getting parts be doable? Special tools? I've got over 13k miles on this and have done all the servicing myself and pretty much refuse to take it to the dealership/mechanic.

Edit: Also, has anyone found better pricing for body parts? http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/yamahagenuineparts/showmodel.asp?Type=12&make=yamahamc&a=792&vehicleid=2015-Yamaha-Street-Bike-FZ-07

This is a time-honored routine for crashed bikes.
Most likely just needs the triple clamp pinch bolts loosened, hold the front tire between your knees,  twist the handlebar to make things straight, and tighten the bolts.
Try loosening just the top triple clamp pinch bolts or else you'll want to get the weight off the front wheel.

I got the front end jacked, top and bottom triple clamp loosened, hell everything loosened, I can twist it straight with enough force, but everything goes back to crooked when I let it go. Sign that the tubes are bent? If I tighten everything down while under tension it seems a decent run in with pot hole will just revert it back.

Wow, those prices are nearly half off of partsfinder, thanks.

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally got it back. The shop had to order the parts from Yamaha in Japan(understandably). Just the left tube was replaced. Looking back I wish I had just done it myself, but I've been going through school and working at the same time so it was nice not having to worry about the bike for a bit.
Grand total was $300 for the tube and work.
I just bought a new helmet (Icon Airmada $190).
And I'll be spending about $200 dollars for body parts.

No lessons were learned.

Came out less expensive than I would have expected. That's not too bad at least.

Also, really great helmet.

Everything went braap.
